By Liz McMillan Most of today’s hardware manufacturers are building servers with at least one SATA Port, but not every systems engineer utilizes them. This is considered a loss in the game of maximizing potential storage space in a fixed unit. The SATADOM Series was created by Innodisk as a high-performance, small form factor boot drive with low power consumption to be plugged into the unused SATA port on your server board as an alternative to hard drive or USB boot-up. Built for 1U systems, this powerful device is smaller than a one dollar coin, and frees up otherwise dead space on your motherboard.
To meet the requirements of tomorrow’s cloud hardware, Innodisk invested internal R&D; resources to develop our SATA III series of products. The SATA III SATADOM boasts 500/180MBs R/W Speeds respectively, or double R/W Speed of SATA II products. Sep. 4, 2014 07:15 PM EDT Reads: 7,819 |

A funny thing has happened in the technology world, the hype cycle has become far more than a cycle that you watch and smile at. It has become a sales frenzy, while people try to make a name and/or sell you stuff before the idea or product category has even solidified. You can see it all around you, and as has been going on for years, the trend seems to be worsening. I call it a funny thing because the truly revolutionary technologies – like server virtualization – really didn’t need a full-on hype cycle at all. Virtualization just kept growing year after year. People would declare “the year of virtualization!” and the year would pass, with more servers virtualized but no mass shift from one paradigm to the other.
One funny thing about DevOps is that it is often touted that constant, on-the-fly changes are the way of the future in operations, and DevOps enables those changes. While this sounds really good, and some organizations are actually doing this type of DevOps, I think it is time that, for the enterprise, we strongly question that premise.
While it is really very cool to think about moving an entire web server from a farm to the cloud with just a script, upgrading a system while it’s hot, or spinning up more instances of a server without having to configure anything, I propose that, for the average enterprise, it is simply not necessary.
The term hybrid is somewhat misleading. In the original sense of the word, it means to bring together two disparate "things" that result in some single new "thing". But technology has adapted the meaning of the word to really mean the bridging of two different technological models. For example, a hybrid cloud isn't really smashing up two cloud environments to form a single, new cloud, rather it's bridging the two technologies in a seamless way so as to make them interoperate and cooperate as if they were a single, unified cloud.
This post is the first in a multi-part series of posts on the many options for collecting and forwarding log data from different platforms and the pros and cons of each. In this first post we will focus on Syslog, and will provide background on the protocol.
Syslog has been around for a number of decades and provides a protocol used for transporting event messages between computer systems and software applications. The protocol utilizes a layered architecture, which allows the use of any number of transport protocols for transmission of syslog messages. It also provides a message format that allows vendor-specific extensions to be provided in a structured way. Syslog is now standardized by the IETF in RFC 5424 (since 2009), but has been around since the 80's and for many years served as the de facto standard for logging without any authoritative published specification.
The software-defined data center (SDDC) and hyper-converged markets have been gaining significant steam of late, and last week’s VMworld event put an even brighter spotlight on the space. When considering hyper-converged infrastructure solutions, it’s important to note the distinction between "stack owners" and "stack dependents." Stack dependents are solutions that run in virtual machines and sit on top of another vendor's hypervisor. Stack owners are vendors who run on bare metal and build the entire stack themselves.
Skytap recently announced the availability of a Docker template in the Skytap Cloud Public Template Library. Docker is an open platform for developers and sysadmins to build, ship, and run distributed applications. This new template allows you to easily experiment with or deploy Docker-based containers within Skytap Cloud.
In 2013, the National Football League struck a landmark deal with Microsoft that gives Xbox users exclusive interactive access to games each week and requires coaches and coordinators to use Surface tablets on the sidelines. The deal is worth a staggering $400 million over the next five years, which makes one very loud, boisterous statement: Technology is big business in sports.
It isn’t exactly groundbreaking news. Networks and stadiums have been implementing technology designed to enhance the viewer experience for decades. The Jumbotron is a perfect example. Arrowhead Stadium, home to the Kansas City Chiefs, built its in 1991 — 23 years ago. But now, big sports are thinking tech on a much smaller scale, and the newest gizmos and gadgets are poised to change the way we view games and matches forever.
When we are deciding between public or private cloud implementation there are some capabilities we need to take into consideration and security is one of the top ones. Other characteristics like integration with existing systems, costs and management are also important.
Looking at the management side of a cloud environment, there may be some delivery models that can be used in this arena that can bring new ways into the decision process.
In today’s post in the modernizing your infrastructure with Hybrid Cloud series, I am going to talk about Hyper-V over SMB, which we introduced in Windows Server 2012. It is also important to note that you can use storage spaces to house your SMB share that Hyper-V will leveraged. In Part 7 I talked about storage spaces: Modernizing Your Infrastructure with Hybrid Cloud - Storage Spaces in Windows Server 2012 R2 (Part7)
Some don’t know but “yes” there is a past for the Internet of Things. What’s really interesting is what the future looks like. Just imagine the Internet of Things in the year 2025. Can you?
Yet another retailer has confessed that their systems were breached and an untold number of victims join the growing list of those who have had their data was stolen. This one could be bigger than the infamous Target breach. I wonder if some day we’ll be referring to periods of time by the breach that occurred. ‘What? You don’t remember the Target breach of ’13! Much smaller than the Insert Company Here Breach of 2019!’ Or almost like battles of a long war. ‘The Breach of 2013 was a turning point in the fight against online crime,’ or some other silly notion.
Regardless if you’ve migrated multiple applications or this is your first migration to a public Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) you will want to run a small proof-of-concept to make sure that the basic elements of data flow operate as expected and your components will run in the IaaS environment. This week I spent some time experimenting with the three top IaaS offerings: Amazon AWS, Google Compute Cloud and Microsoft Azure. The architecture was relatively simple: 3 docker containers, one hosting a LAMP—Linux, Apache, MySQL & PHP—stack running WordPress, one hosting Postfix mail server forwarding all mail, and one hosting CVS. The results of the testing were informative.
