By Liz McMillan The industry is heated with debates on whether adopting private or public cloud is the smartest, best, cheapest, you name it choice. But this debate is missing the mark. Businesses shouldn’t be discussing public vs. private, but rather how can they make the two work together to their greatest advantage. The ideal is to merge on-premise and off-premise into a seamless environment that can be managed as a single entity – a forward-looking stance that will eventually see major adoption. But as of late 2013, hybrid cloud was still “rare,” noted Gartner analyst Tom Bittman.
In his session at 15th Cloud Expo, Marten Mickos, CEO of Eucalyptus Systems, will discuss how public clouds need on-premise satellites to win and, conversely, how on-premise environments cannot be really powerful unless they are connected to the public cloud. It’s not two competing worlds; it’s two dimensions of the same world.Jun. 30, 2014 10:00 AM EDT Reads: 1,944 |

By Elizabeth White What do a firewall and a fortress have in common? They are no longer strong enough to protect the valuables housed inside. Like the walls of an old fortress, the cracks in the firewall are allowing the bad guys to slip in – unannounced and unnoticed. By the time these thieves get in, the damage is already done and the network is already compromised. Intellectual property is easily slipped out the back door leaving no trace of forced entry. If we want to reign in on these cybercriminals, it’s high time we start thinking the way these thieves think. If we don’t, malware, rootkits, AETs and other nefarious threats will continue to undermine our sense of security. Jun. 24, 2014 09:45 AM EDT Reads: 2,849 |
By Elizabeth White Fundamentally, SDN is still mostly about network plumbing. While plumbing may be useful to tinker with, what you can do with your plumbing is far more intriguing. A rigid interpretation of SDN confines it to Layers 2 and 3, and that’s reasonable. But SDN opens opportunities for novel constructions in Layers 4 to 7 that solve real operational problems in data centers. “Data center,” in fact, might become anachronistic – data is everywhere, constantly on the move, seemingly always overflowing. Networks move data, but not all networks are suitable for all data.
In his session at 15th Cloud Expo, Steve Riley, Technical Leader in the Office of the CTO at Riverbed Technology, will discuss how finding (or building) the right network, with the right applications, is still a labor-intensive task. Must it always be this way? No: for networks will soon be expressed as code. Finally, the data, the applications that process it, the networks that move it and the objects that store it can all be de...Jun. 23, 2014 08:30 AM EDT Reads: 2,314 |

By Elizabeth White Users are becoming increasingly impatient with new apps that don’t work. Often, you get one shot to get it right. But, new applications are being rolled out all the time and being accessed from all sorts of devices. Operations need to provide developers with real-world production data to help them identify performance issues before applications go into production. This Application Lifecycle Optimization (or DevOps) is key for businesses to reduce the risk of faulty application rollouts.

Software-defined architectures are critical for achieving the right mix of efficiency and scale needed to meet the challenges that will come with the Internet of Things
If you've been living under a rock (or rack in the data center) you might not have noticed the explosive growth of technologies and architectures designed to address emerging challenges with scaling data centers. Whether considering the operational aspects (devops) or technical components (SDN, SDDC, Cloud), software-defined architectures are the future enabler of business, fueled by the increasing demand for applications.
On the one hand, the BYOX trends that drive cloud service adoption and worker self-enablement are transforming traditional IT into a User-Centric IT model that focuses on empowering and enabling workers. On the other hand, the free-wheeling nature of the cloud and the regular news of breaches creates a gap in security teams’ ability to quickly assess risk and exposure for these types of events. Further, with the cloud-based self-service model, it becomes more difficult to identify affected users and formulate a rational response plan.
Inarguably one of the drivers of software-defined architectures (cloud, SDDC, and SDN) as well as movements like DevOps is the complexity inherent in today's data center networks. For years now we've added applications and services, and responded to new threats and requirements from the business with new boxes and new capabilities. All of them cobbled together using traditional networking principles that adhere to providing reliability and scale through redundancy.

Welcome to the fourth era of digital.
The first three periods or ages or phases — call them what you like — were each defined clearly by transformative events.
First, the dawn of the personal computer age in April 1977 with the debut of the Apple II (and validated in August 1981 with the introduction of the IBM PC).
Next, the beginning of the Internet age when the Netscape browser was released in 1994, which redefined forever the way we connect.
Then, on June 29, 2007 — ushered in again by Steve Jobs and Apple — the mobility era began with the unveiling of the first iPhone, which ushered in a “Mobile First” mindset for the masses.
By now we’ve seen plenty of cost justification on the efficiency of using cloud infrastructure. You can easily Google “Cloud Computing Value” and get a stack of analyst and vendor reports. Or just pop open Amazon’s AWS value calculator and plug in some numbers. There are huge one-time and recurring IT cost savings to be realized by moving on-premise systems to cloud infrastructure.
So we get a better deal on compute cost with cloud. That’s something. Now let’s wring value out of one the most expensive and high-risk IT activities: software development and testing.
North Bridge in partnership with GigaOm Research released their 2014 Future of Cloud Computing – 4th Annual Survey Results. As you examine the 124 slides, one thing is obvious that the greatest growth in cloud computing is coming from Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). Market research like this is very important because it provides tangible proof for our anecdotal hypotheses. That said, the report does not extrapolate what is the most interesting facet of SaaS hyper growth—59% in three years—the model for commoditization of business function is market validated.
Anyone who has been involved with security knows there is a balance to providing both security and privacy and performance at the same time. Security is often blamed for performance woes, particularly when cryptography is involved.
SSL and TLS have long addressed this balance by leveraging custom-built hardware to enhance the performance of the most taxing components of these protocols: session setup. The "easy" part of securing communications (if one can use easy with respect to cryptography) is bulk encryption. While certainly more taxing on performance than clear text, relative to the more complex and compute intensive process of the handshaking required to set up such sessions, easy is an appropriate term.
72%. That's an estimate of how much of the IT budget is allocated to simply keeping the lights on (a euphemism for everything from actually keeping the lights on to cooling, heating, power, maintenance, upgrades, and day to day operations) in the data center.
In a recent Forrester Research survey of IT leaders at more than 3,700 companies, respondents estimated that they spend an average 72% of the money in their budgets on such keep-the-lights-on functions as replacing or expanding capacity and supporting ongoing operations and maintenance, while only 28% of the money goes toward new projects.
Addressing the global cloud skills gap is the number one priority to help accelerate the successful adoption of Cloud, according to the Cloud Credential Council. To address the skills gap specifically related to FedRAMP, the Cloud Credential Council has released an online course and exam for FedRAMP authored by leading government cloud expert Kevin L. Jackson.
Ask two politically opposed people in any given country about the causes of the country’s problems, and guess what? Each will give you an answer filtered through their world-view. Through what they know, and what they believe. That is not to say one is right and one is wrong, both simply see things in the manner their background and experiences tell them is right.
We definitely live in interesting times. Server virtualization has just about reached saturation, application development is going through a wide range of changes from the return of automated testing to continuous integration and the other facets of DevOps, SDN is the next wonder of the world, once we agree what exactly it is capable of and where it fits best, cloud didn’t conquer the world, and people are still building physical datacenters, yet cloud offers solutions to some problems. And all of this is changing while IT staff has increased security concerns, projects are still rolling in, and every new solution or system takes even more man-hours to implement.
When Instagram was sold to Facebook in 2012, it employed only 13 people and maintained over 4 billion photos shared by its 80 million registered users.
Internally, Instagram was a small business. Externally, it was a web monster. Filling the gap between those two contradictory perspectives is DevOps.
Now to be fair, Instagram (like many other web monster properties today) has it easier than most other businesses because it supported only one application. One. That's in stark contrast to large enterprises which are, by most analyst firms, said to manage not one but one hundred and even one thousand applications - at the same time. Our own data indicates an average of 312 applications per customer, many of which are certainly integrated and interacting with one another.
About 8 years ago at my previous employer we started a project related to Autonomic Networking. Autonomic Networking is modeled after Autonomic Computing, an IBM initiative from the early 2000s, targeted at creating self managing computing elements. The network version intends to create a framework by which network elements become largely self managed. It does so by defining discovery, awareness and analytics that build some sense of state. Once a network has a sense of its expected state, anything that alters that state can be reacted to following a set of defined or even learned rules.
Autonomic Networking can be as simple as reacting to threshold alarms. In many of our network switches today, there are basic reactions to error conditions. Loop detection mechanisms shut off ports when a loop is detected. Specific error conditions may lead to pre-emptive switchover to alternate links or paths. Many of the protocols we use that govern connectivity and patching have autonomic capabilities, they react to error conditions and link failures and attempt to keep the disruption to the network to an absolute minimum.
Experts say that cloud computing is disruptive and then continue on to discuss how the cloud quickly enables innovation while competition between cloud service providers drive costs down. Both of these scenarios are accurate, but the disruption from cloud has additional shockwaves that only now beginning to be felt. Hardware and software vendors are starting to show signs of wear on their revenue streams due to cloud.
