Over the last week, the cloud world has witnessed a few important
announcements from a couple of major cloud players. There were some new
feature releases from Amazon and Microsoft. In addition, Amazon has announced
the SAP Business Suite certification on AWS. Also, there was a ‘must
read’ post published by Microsoft. Plus, ActiveState has announced about
its significant revenue growth from the past year.
Here’s a quick summary of cloud happenings over the last week.
Beginning with the IaaS leader, Amazon has introduced the integration of
Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) with Amazon Simple Notification
Service (SNS). This service allows a user to set up notifications for any RDS
instances by creating an Event subscription. Next, Amazon has announced that
AWS has been certified to host the SAP Business Suite environment in full

Normally I try to write applications on the DataWindow or Appeon but every
now and then I get a question that makes me sit back and say, "Huh?"
In this case the question concerns the PostOpen event. I've seen that event
named different things: ue_post_open, postOpen, post_open, ue_postOpen, etc.
It has, as far as I can see, always had post and open in the name of the
event. Further, just about every framework that I've ever seen has had that
event in the base window.

What forums you may ask; the Sybase NNTP forums? No, those are going away.
Not on the schedule that was originally proposed (December 1 of 2012), but
they will go away soon. Replacing them are the online discussion forums in
the PowerBuilder Development Center (PDC), part of the SAP Community Network
(SCN). Never fear though, the information on the Sybase NNTP forums aren't
going away; a searchable archive of the messages will be available.

To that point I'd like to talk about the seldom discussed Virtual Directory Server. I've always loved VDS and it's MaXware predecessor, MVD. There's just so much this product can do. While most of the SAP world is familiar with the Virtual Directory as a Web Services proxy for GRC or use with HCM, it is so powerful and flexible that it can do everything from provisioning to authorization and authentication management, to representing data so...
There have been quite a lot of rumors these last few weeks with regards to Apple reportedly working on an iWatch. I was wondering what they would gain with such a move? Some have pointed out that they already have the iPod Nano as a simple watch, but this repeats the functionality of the music player and lacks functionality of the full iOS device. Does this mean the age of Dick Tracy is around the corner? Far fetched you think? I would have agreed, but after I visited the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, CA last week it may not be. The Computer History Museum exhibits hardware up to the year 2000 and it's awesome how far we have gone beyond that in 13 years! So this may not be far off… and trust Apple to make it happen.
