2011 was a year of rapid adoption for public and private cloud services. Instant and on-demand server provisioning was the driving force behind the massive growth. Amazon has started offering Windows Server instances on its Free Usage Tier.
AWS positions the move as helping new customers get started in the cloud. They can run, test or develop Windows apps, host a web site or do all of those things and not be locked into a particular operating system.
Amazon's free widgetry has previously been limited to Linux instances. Now it says it's "fine-tuned the micro instances to make them even better at running Microsoft Windows Server."
Presumably Microsoft would prefer the exposure happen on its Windows Azure PaaS, which is incredibly supposed to add Linux sometime this year.

The way the Amazon deal works developers and businesses can use 750 hours of EC2 Micro Instances a month at no charge for a year. Apparently the curious can also run another 750 hours of Linux as well.
The offer includes 613MB of memory and 32-bit and 64-bit platform support as well as 30GB of free S3, 30GB of free Elastic Block Store, 750 hours of free Elastic Load Balancing, some free AWS data transfer and a dollop of its new DynamoDB NoSQL database, SimpleDB, Simple Queue Service, Simple Notification Service and Cloudwatch metrics.
The Free Usage Tier is available in all Amazon regions except GovCloud.
AWS has recently added Windows Server 2008 R2 on its high-power Cluster Compute instances, an SQL 2012 beta preview, Microsoft BizSpark licenses and support for Windows HPC clusters using EC2 instances.
See http://aws.amazon.com/free/ and http://aws.amazon.com/windows/.
