For the second post in the CTOVision summary of the McKinsey report on Big
Data, we take a look at the impact of Big Data on production, supply, and
logistics. When we discuss Big Data, there’s often an implicit assumption
that it has to do entirely with IT functions. However, Big Data actually will
have a large impact on manufacturing value chains.
While the manufacturing sector has historically been a driver of GDP and
employment for many developed economies, globalization has made it a global
activity with extended supply chains made possible by advances in information
and communications technology as well as reduced transportation and market

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has been in the Big Data business since
1999 when it launched the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification
System (IAFIS), the world’s largest biometric database on individuals.
IAFIS contains over 55 million sets of fingerprints and is used by law
enforcement agencies nationwide for criminal investigations and civil
background checks. To keep pace of the evolution of biometrics as well as the

Apple just released the details on the iPhone 4S, for those expecting the 5,
they were extremely underwhelmed, and Apple’s stock has taken a bit of a
tumble. The updates were all internal and all on the back-end. This has made
quite a few people upset (mostly because they were hoping for the iPhone 5)
but the device is in fact a good deal more powerful.

On Monday, December 5, Bob Gourley went on the Enterprise CIO Forum to
explain Big Data and why it matters. First, he defined Big Data simply as the
data your organization cannot currently analyze. Though some technologists
give more precise definitions, this sums up the challenge enterprises now
face. If you can deal with all of your data now, you don’t have a Big Data
problem, but as soon as you have more data than you can effectively manage to
