It’s time to think about time.
According to Wikipedia, in physics, spacetime is any mathematical model that
combines space and time into a single continuum. In cosmology, the concept
of spacetime combines space and time to a single abstract universe. But you
know we’re not here to talk about physics, cosmology, or the universe, as
interesting as they may be.
For this moment in time, I want you to think of Cloud computing along the
lines of space and time, because too many businesses shifting to the Cloud
are focused on space, and space alone. You see, traditionally, for business
or enterprise IT, time has not been a factor, so it was not an element
usually given much consideration.
Unfortunately, when that 4th dimension is overlooked, many businesses
conclude that “the Cloud doesn’t work”.
If you’re shifting your business to the Cloud, it is imperative to

It has certainly been an exciting week in the Cloudsphere with Dell and HP
battling it out over 3PAR. It’s clear who is on Dell and HP’s radar,
and I’m looking forward to seeing the rest of 2010 Cloud acquisitions as
the segment continues to consolidate.
Its been almost 2 quarters since the last report, though the BTC Logic team
has done an excellent job in their Top Ten Cloud Companies in 2Q10 Report to
pick up the slack. CRN released The 100 Coolest Cloud Computing Vendors
list joining the The Top 150 Players in Cloud Computing, 85 Cloud Computing
Vendors Shaping the Emergin... (more)
Given the state of the global economy and the increasing adoption of Cloud
computing it’s no surprise that lately there have been a number of
articles on achieving Cloud computing savings ranging from 40% savings
according to an EEOC case study to as much as 80% savings according to
Microsoft.
However, not everyone seems to believe that they can save money by migrating
to the Cloud. A common conversation that I often encounter with business
owners is that they have done a “direct” comparison, and don’t see how
they can save money migrating to the Cloud. One of those points is ad... (more)
As one with large enterprise experience, I’ve seen first hand the challenge
of migrating from old technology to new technologies on-premise. Migrations
range from months to years depending on the size of the migration effort, as
well as the number, and type of applications involved. In some cases, by the
time the migration is completed, the hardware technology purchased has become
obsolete and the vendor is only too happy to refresh your physical
environment or provide an opportunity to consolidate your servers on to a
larger, more expensive system. Cloud offerings seem to be the... (more)
OpSource, a privately held, SAS 70 Type II, PCI DSS Level 1 Cloud Service
Provider headquartered in Santa Clara, CA with 150 employees worldwide has
been acquired by Dimension Data, a $4.7 billion ICT services and solutions
provider and wholly owned subsidiary of NTT.
Like others before them (Verizon + Terremark; Time Warner + NaviSite;
CenturyLink+Savvis), they too have “figured it out”. Cloud computing is a
complex, capital-intensive business. Scaling is expensive. Other companies in
the segment are likely to continue marching along this road, particularly as
the executive man... (more)
