Change is painful, ask any retailer or grocer that faced the onslaught of
WalMart’s expansion in the past few decades. New business models emerge
when there is a market opportunity and it isn’t very comfortable for
any business owner to face the fact that they will have to deal with new
progressive competition or go broke.
Enter Planet Fitness. I had been skeptical about the press and buzz I've
heard on this low cost health club concept but recently took the time to
acquire their latest 2011 Franchise Disclosure Document [FDD]. The FDD is a
document required by US Federal law and by various States that regulate the
sale of franchises. It discloses pretty much everything you’d want to
know about a franchise concept. Having a franchise background like I do and
the Planet Fitness FDD in hand, it wasn’t long before I got a sense of
what is going... (more)
I had the pleasure yesterday to engage in an interesting event that brought
together YMCA executives : NAYDO 2011 . Star Trac sponsored a reception at
NAYDO where I shared key trends in social media and philanthropy. Lots of fun
and thanks to all of you who attended, especially Lisa Ramirez and others
from the YMCA of Greater San Antonio, one of our fitmarc customers. Watch
this funny video with Sal Pellegrino in it from NAYDO.
When I say a revolution is happening that is and will turn every industry on

The infographic above shows the current size of major social networks as well
as the other well-known online services used on a daily basis relative to
their peers. It also overlays the size of each company’s mobile user
base. You’ll see Skype, Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, MySpace, LinkedIn,
and more (wonder why Microsoft paid what they did for Skype?). Check out the
agency’s infographic from last year to see the relative changes.
Notable differences include: The rise of Chinese Qzone and Twitter, the fall
of Myspace, and the stasis of Friendster.

Advertising; its a big part of any marketing strategy, but I'm not sure many
business owners, particularly in the health club industry or the fitness
industry in general, understand it. A lot of marketing practices are flawed
and as a result advertising resources wasted [burned hence the photo] and
therefore I'd suggest people take time to carefully reevaluate their strategy
and advertising campaigns.
Fundamental shifts have occurred in how people decide to buy. You've heard
it, buyers don't trust advertising anymore. Fitness industry players, both in
the B2C and B2B world need ... (more)
How does it feel to be wrong ? How does it feel to realize you were really
really wrong ? Culture trumps strategy and often leader's ego's are the
BIGGEST stumbling blocks to an organization's progression and important
innovations.
Watch Kathryn Schulz , @wrongologist and author of Being Wrong, Adventures In
The Margins Of Error talk about our culture and our common attitudes about
right and wrong and what's the problem with that. In my view its THE key
problem to industries, organizations and people progressing to a new a better
ways of solving our biggest challenges.
