The Only Enterprise IT Event in 2011
Covering the Entire Scope of the
Cloud Computing Spectrum |
| |
Cloud computing is steadily becoming an integral
part of the enterprise computing environment. |
|

Cloud Expo was announced on February 24, 2007, the day the term "cloud computing" was coined. That same year, the first Cloud Expo took place in New York City with 450 delegates. This coming November 7-10, 2011, Cloud Expo is returning to Santa Clara with more than 5,000 delegates and over 100 sponsors and exhibitors.
"Cloud" has become synonymous with "computing" and "software" in two short years. Cloud Expo is the new PC Expo, Comdex, and InternetWorld of our decade. By 2012, more than 50,000 delegates per year will participate in Cloud Expo worldwide.
The cloud is certainly a compelling alternative to running all applications within a traditional corporate data center. But moving from theory into practice is where things get complicated, and this is where attending a top industry event like Cloud Expo comes in.
No one can take full advantage of cloud computing without first becoming familiar with the latest issues and trends, which is why the organizing principle of the 9th International Cloud Expo November 7-10, 2011, is to ensure - through an intensive four-day schedule of keynotes, general and breakout sessions, and our bustling Expo Floor - that attending delegates leave with abundant resources, ideas and examples they can apply immediately to leveraging the Cloud, helping them to maximize performance, minimize cost and improve the scalability of their Enterprise IT endeavors.
Delegates will leave 9th Cloud Expo with dramatically increased understanding of the entire scope of the cloud computing spectrum, from storage to security.
| Whether you're an enterprise or small to medium business, you'll soon be benefiting from the Cloud. Join your peers in Silicon Valley, November 7-10, and maximize those benefits already in 2011. See you in Santa Clara! |

Articles & Feature Stories By Maureen O'Gara Microsoft is going to let users move some of their licensed Microsoft server software to Amazon’s cloud under its newfangled Microsoft License Mobility with Software Assurance program.
It says they can move Windows Server application licenses between their on-premises environment and AWS.
In a blog Microsoft goes off on an Azure-ignoring riff saying, “This is a game changer because now you can get industry leading enterprise-grade software from Microsoft and run them on the highly reliable, scalable on-demand infrastructure from AWS – it’s the best of both worlds….Imagine the possibilities!” Jul. 17, 2011 09:00 AM EDT Reads: 1,063 | By Elizabeth White With virtualized workloads proliferating widely, the nature of management and optimization tools will need to undergo a dramatic change. Platforms and best practices that perform intelligent scheduling of workloads across virtual machines, as well as diligent provisioning and de-provisioning of VMs to control VM sprawl, will be crucial to ensure maximum performance and utilization of infrastructure.
In his session at the 9th International Cloud Expo, James Thomason, Chief Architect at Gale Technologies, will describe approaches for scheduling and optimization within and across clouds, including how to allocate workloads across any type of cloud, private or public; ensure that workloads have guaranteed resource; provision and configure workloads as reservations become current; and tear them down when reservations expire – thus preventing VM sprawl. Enterprise agreements with cloud vendors specify that information placed in the cloud will be available when a company wants it – but not where it is living from one moment to the next.
In his session at the 9th International Cloud Expo, Dave Asprey, VP of Cloud Security at Trend Micro, will address the important concerns that this “always available from somewhere” data presents to security administrators, and how – or even if – they can comply with new data privacy and processing laws when data is not location specific. The new facilities mean it’s added to the sites in Singapore, Germany, Canada and the United States delivering SmartCloud services and its 13 global cloud labs, seven of which are in Asia-Pacific, specifically in China, India, Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Singapore.
The fact that they’re in Asia is important to IBM’s five-year growth plan and the $7 billion bogey it set for cloud revenues.
IBM figures its jumping into the public cloud market in Japan is a positive post-disaster business story. “We’re committed to operating our data centers and facilities at a level that meets or exceeds the highest industry and regulatory standards,” said Steve Kinman, Vice President of Customer Relations for SoftLayer. “We're proud to be one of the first in the hosting industry to complete a SSAE 16 review, assuring our customers that they can count on us for best practices in all that we do.”

As enterprises in ever-increasing numbers start to evaluate cloud computing, many are assessing which applications can run in public clouds, which should run in a private cloud, and how to ensure that applications will be portable from one to another. Since there will be many different kinds of clouds, another issue is what kind of cloud resources should you use?
How easy will it be to migrate to a public or private cloud, and how easy will it be to move between them? If you entrust your data to a Cloud Computing vendor, how will the vendor secure your data and segregate it from that of other customers? Will they encrypt the data both in motion and at rest? Here is an early sneak-peek at some of the many and varied themes and topics due to be discussed in the breakout technical sessions scheduled in the course of the jam-packed four days.
Automation in the Cloud – In a session to be given at Cloud Expo in June by HP Software's Director, Cloud Global Practice, Marc Wilsonson, Wilkinson will provide best practices from IT experts to equip attendees with the knowledge to build automated, repeatable processes that provide control, manageability and assurance for cloud success.
Cloud Integration – The Founder & CTO of Dell Boomi, Rick Nucci, will be giving a session at Cloud Expo New York on "Cloud Integration: Best Practices for IT Managers" in which he will cover a set of business and technical "Best Practices" for cloud integration.
Enterprise Cloud Computing – Having talked about Enterprise Cloud Computing as "The Infrastructure's Ultimate Revenge" in 2009, the CIO of the National Reconnaissance Office, Jill Tummler Singer, will ask if government organizations and corporations are riding a real wave of IT change to the future...or whether both government and corporate IT is caught up in a water spout so far off the shore that no one will feel its impact? By Pat Romanski There is one constant in data centers: Application groups always need more. Until recently, apps have been at the mercy of IT operations to feed their need.
In his Day Three Keynote at the 8th International Cloud Expo, Pete Malcolm will discuss how with the advent of public cloud offerings, apps can bypass ops entirely and get the resources they need with just a few clicks and a credit card. What does this mean for the future of IT ops?
Pete Malcolm is CEO of Abiquo, a leading vendor of Cloud infrastructure management solutions. Described by SYS-CON's Jeremy Geelan as "a beacon of light amid the murky fog surrounding Cloud Computing", Malcolm is the inventor of the term "Resource Cloud", a concept which provides complete separation between physical infrastructure providers and virtual enterprise consumers, with substantial benefits to both. Cloud computing overlaps some of the concepts of distributed, grid and utility computing, however it does have its own meaning if contextually used correctly. The conceptual overlap is partly due to technology changes, usages and implementations over the years.
Trends in usage of the terms from Google searches shows Cloud Computing is a relatively new term introduced in the past year. There has also been a decline in general interest of Grid, Utility and Distributed computing.
