In October 2009, Enterprise Cloud Computing was considered bleeding edge technology by many but there was something that seemed different about its value potential and adoption rate. For CIOs, it seemed a chance to provision affordable infrastructure quickly, alleviating delays to mission critical deliveries. Federal CIOs interest in Enterprise Cloud Computing was limited to innovators and early adopters. Two years later, where does Enterprise Cloud Computing stand? Is it for real? Today, Cloud Computing is on the Gartner® technology hype curve in the “peak of inflated expectations” category. Its placement on the curve—even though we all should prepare for the dreaded “trough of disillusionment” dip—indicates Cloud Computing is, indeed, for real. There are other indicators of note also. CIOs across the board are focused on the success Cloud Computing can deliver. V... (more)

EMC Successor: It's Pat! Or Not...

EMC CEO Joe Tucci still plans to step down next year. A few internal candidates, including former Intel CTO and current EMC President Pat Gelsinger, are still in the running. And the company faces, as do all major technology companies, a serious responsibility in adapting itself sufficiently to the emerging demand for cloud computing. A Bloomberg News story earlier today focused on Gelsinger and a few other internal candidates, their respective strengths, and the likelihood of them assuming the top job. Nothing new here, really. I've never heard a bad word about Pat Gelsinger, an... (more)

New Business Monetization Network Models – Google+ vs Facebook

A number of interesting issues have come to light in the recent announcement of Google+ intention to move into social networking in direct competition with Facebook. "Getting It" It may be that Google finally "gets it" with the idea of "circles" and "sparks" as a way of understanding social network segmentation that is superior to Facebook. Specifically the ability to segment different friendship groups into separate conversations is not just a grouping of relationship data but a fundamental "wakeup call" that this is how virtual communities actually work. It's often been surpri... (more)

Xen, KVM and the Linux Choice

There has been a significant amount of derision heaped on Xen after its successful integration into the Linux kernel last month. One wouldn't think such criticism is warranted, since the inclusion of Xen in the Linux kernel puts it on equal footing with KVM. Yet, when Oracle's Wim Coekaerts announced the inclusion of Xen code for DomO and DomU support in Linux, many industry observers took the opportunity to lambaste Xen for being too-little-too-late. True, KVM has been more successful in the briefer time it has existed. Xen has had plenty of opportunity to be the go-to virtualiza... (more)

Amazon S3 as a Team Network Drive

Amazon S3 is getting more and more popular with Small and Medium sized Businesses(SMBs). These SMBs typically have mobile workers and office workers. They are looking for a cloud drive solution for a team of users. The earlier solutions from Gladinet requires the Amazon S3 master account holder to share the account credentials with the team so each team member can mount the same Amazon S3 account and buckets, thus they can all use the same cloud drive. With the latest version from Gladinet, it is now possible to integrate and leverage the Amazon Identity and Account Management (I... (more)

Financial services tend to be the early adopters of most technology and have forward-thinking developers on staff. However, only 30% of financial services data centers have been virtualized. Meanwhile, those prolific developers are either already using public cloud resources or are trying to. What will be the business impact of avoiding the cloud conversation? In his general session at Cloud Expo New York, Abiquo CEO Pete Malcolm discussed whether financial services organizations are risking se...
Many enterprises are struggling to develop a cloud computing strategy. Cloud computing seems like it ought to be a game-changing technology, but so often when the initial proof of concept is finished, it appears to have simply rearranged the deckchairs within a titanic IT department. The problem is we have been trained through decades of IT implementation to focus on certain metrics. Unfortunately, those are the wrong ones. Consequently, when it comes to cloud computing, most of us are playing "...
The advantages of using the cloud are apparent, but the approaches to the cloud are still in a heated industry debate. Renting cloud space from a vendor, private clouds, open clouds – just what is the best choice and where is the industry heading? While renting cloud space from a vendor seems easy, it’s difficult to move off these clouds, and it’s especially problematic when you’d like to test another provider’s cloud. Private clouds tie you into a verticalized stack, limiting flexibility and ch...
As cloud application adoption becomes pervasive throughout the enterprise, concerns around cloud data privacy, residency, and security continue to grow. A number of enterprises are slowing, and even reversing, their cloud application adoption until they can address the concerns stemming from regulatory compliance requirements, industry standards, or internal policies surrounding sensitive data management. In his general session at Cloud Expo New York, Terry Woloszyn, Founder/CTO of PerspecSys ...
While the Cloud is a common future for a majority of IT shops, we believe there are two principle cloud development concepts to examine before you develop or proceed too far with your cloud strategies. Should you take an evolutionary path and transform your existing IT environment to a cloud of service computing… or do you jump to the “head of the cloud”, and revolutionize your approach with a comprehensive cloud solution… or both. In his general session at Cloud Expo New York, Andi Mann, vice...
There is one constant in data centers: application groups always need more. Until recently, apps have been at the mercy of IT operations to feed their need. In his keynote at Cloud Expo 2011 New York, Abiquo CEO Pete Malcolm discussed how, with the advent of public cloud offerings, apps can bypass ops entirely and get the resources they need with just a few clicks and a credit card. What does this mean for the future of IT ops?
With substantial growth in cloud services, over 2.5 billion connected users, more than 1000 exabytes of Internet traffic and 15 billion devices accessing cloud services by 2015, transforming datacenters to support this growth can be complex. To address the challenges facing IT and realize significant benefits of cloud computing, it’s essential that cloud solutions are open, interoperable and built on standards. In his general session at Cloud Expo New York, Jason Waxman, Intel Data Center Grou...

Want to make sense of the hottest new concept in Enterprise IT? Want to understand in just hours what experts have spent many hundreds of days deciphering? Cloud computing is a technology that has rapidly evolving peppered with a lot of hype along the way. Customers find it hard to navigate through this and make sense of what aspects of this technology will give them real business benefit. Cloud Computing Bootcamp, led by our 2011 Bootcamp Instructor Larry Carvalho, is a great way to get a practical understanding of this technology. We offer multiple days of actionable insight into what vendor offerings are currently available and help you comprehend their strategy. The ever-popular Bootcamp, which is now held regularly around the world, is being held in conjunction with the 8th Cloud Expo, June 6-9, 2011, at the Javits Center in New York City, NY.
I can't comprehend that any event producer anywhere in the world today would answer this question by picking any one of the five available options presented. "A leading tool?" What do you mean by "a leading tool?" What other tools would you possibly have in this day and age? This question, the survey itself and its participants belong to the last decade. I personally don't use email anymore; I communicate through "Twitter." We don't do press releases unless we have to; we tweet stories to our roughly 12,000 followers in 8 channels. The news gets amplified to hundreds of thousands instantly. Even during Cloud Expo, we reach more people by Twitter than the announcements we make through loudspeakers in the convention centers. I would love to contact the people who are conducting this survey and ask them if any company answered their first question as "don't really consider it." In an age where I personally hail a cab at an airport through Twitter, I can't possibly comprehend which century bubble those people might be living in.

CloudCamp, an unconference where early adopters of Cloud Computing technologies exchange ideas, is being held on Tuesday, June 07, from 5:40 p.m. - 8:40 p.m. at the 8th Cloud Expo, June 6-9, 2011, at the Javits Center in New York City, NY. CloudCamp will be led by Dave Nielsen of CloudCamp and Larry Carvalho of RobustCloud.
Delegates, speakers, sponsors and exhibitors will be traveling from all over the world to New York this coming June 6-9 to attend 8th International Cloud Expo in New York City, co-located at the Jacob Javits Convention Center with 11th Virtualization Conference & Expo. Here is an early sneak-peek at some of the many and varied themes and topics due to be discussed in the breakout technical sessions scheduled in the course of the jam-packed four days. Automation in the Cloud – In a session to be given at Cloud Expo in June by HP Software's Director, Cloud Global Practice, Marc Wilsonson, Wilkinson will provide best practices from IT experts to equip attendees with the knowledge to build automated, repeatable processes that provide control, manageability and assurance for cloud success. Cloud Integration – The Founder & CTO of Dell Boomi, Rick Nucci, will be giving a session at Cloud Expo New York on "Cloud Integration: Best Practices for IT Managers" in which he will cover a set of business and technical "Best Practices" for cloud integration. Enterprise Cloud Computing – Having talked about Enterprise Cloud Computing as "The Infrastructure's Ultimate Revenge" in 2009, the CIO of the National Reconnaissance Office, Jill Tummler Singer, will ask if government organizations and corporations are riding a real wave of IT change to the future...or whether both government and corporate IT is caught up in a water spout so far off the shore that no one will feel its impact?
There is one constant in data centers: Application groups always need more. Until recently, apps have been at the mercy of IT operations to feed their need. In his Day Three Keynote at the 8th International Cloud Expo, Pete Malcolm will discuss how with the advent of public cloud offerings, apps can bypass ops entirely and get the resources they need with just a few clicks and a credit card. What does this mean for the future of IT ops? Pete Malcolm is CEO of Abiquo, a leading vendor of Cloud infrastructure management solutions. Described by SYS-CON's Jeremy Geelan as "a beacon of light amid the murky fog surrounding Cloud Computing", Malcolm is the inventor of the term "Resource Cloud", a concept which provides complete separation between physical infrastructure providers and virtual enterprise consumers, with substantial benefits to both. Malcolm was previously founder and CTO of Orchestria, Benchmark Capital's first European Entrepreneur-in-Residence, and a Senior Vice President with CA, Inc.

Cloud computing is becoming one of the next industry buzz words. It joins the ranks of terms including: grid computing, utility computing, virtualization, clustering, etc. Cloud computing overlaps some of the concepts of distributed, grid and utility computing, however it does have its own meaning if contextually used correctly. The conceptual overlap is partly due to technology changes, usages and implementations over the years. Trends in usage of the terms from Google searches shows Cloud Computing is a relatively new term introduced in the past year. There has also been a decline in general interest of Grid, Utility and Distributed computing. Likely they will be around in usage for quit a while to come. But Cloud computing has become the new buzz word driven largely by marketing and service offerings from big corporate players like Google, IBM and Amazon.

"New infrastructure and operations technologies such as cloud services and virtualization ... were selected by CIOs the most often and are the top-two technologies for 2011," said Mark McDonald, group vice president and head of research for Gartner Executive Programs, as the results were announced of the 2011 CIO Agenda survey by Gartner Executive Programs (EXP). The worldwide CIO survey was conducted by Gartner EXP from September to December 2010 and represents CIO budget plans reported at that time. According to the results, CIOs expect to adopt new cloud services much faster than originally expected. Currently, 3% of CIOs have the majority of IT running in the cloud or on SaaS technologies, but over the next four years CIOs expect this number to increase to 43%.
