Maximize the Return on SAP Investments
SAP is the most widely deployed ERP solution in the world today. However, for all of its strengths in supporting business processes, many organizations find gaining business insight from SAP’s huge repositories a daunting challenge.
SAP’s creation of SAP BW and its acquisition of Business Objects and Sybase are moves in the right direction. Yet these alone may not be enough, especially when you have:
- Multiple SAP instances, often on different releases and rarely fully compatible with SAP/s BI offerings
- Additional source systems outside SAP that house complementary information your business units require
- Additional intermediate data warehouses and marts beyond SAP BW also critical for business analysis
- Additional analysis and reporting tools beyond SAPs offerings that need to leverage SAP source data

Data Virtualization Unlocks SAP Data
Data virtualization’s flexibility and agility make it the ideal solution to the SAP business insight challenge. Three components are required.
- Data Virtualization Platform – The data virtualization platform provides the end-to-end development and operating environment for virtualized access, federation and delivery of SAP data.
- SAP ERP Data Models – To transform obscure SAP table structures into easy to understand and consume data services, pre-built, reusable models are needed.
- SAP BW MDX Transformation – To allow BI developers to use SQL to perform MDX queries, SQL to MDX transformations are required.
Selected Examples:
- Financial and Budget Analysis – To streamline payroll analysis in its budgeting process, a major retailer used Composite Software's Data Virtualization Platform and complementary SAP offerings to access SAP payroll and other systems, produced roll-up views for analysis, and exposed these view into the budget system. The company overcame cost constraints cost to deliver data from multiple sources, and improved its agility to perform financial analysis and reporting.
- Oil and Gas Well Management – To optimize well maintenance and repair, a large oil and gas producer used Composite Software's Data Virtualization Platform and complementary SAP offerings to unlock data from SAP BW and SAP ERP. It company built a dashboard that federated up-to-the-minute well data from the SAP run-time system with the data warehouse data to deliver actionable information required to automate key maintenance and repair decisions. The result was greater efficiency throughout the day and relieved key resources for other value-added initiatives.
