Articles & Feature Stories By Birendra Gosai In parts one, two and three of this article, we provided a brief overview of the CA Technologies virtualization maturity lifecycle, and focused on the server consolidation, infrastructure optimization, and automation & orchestration stages of the lifecycle. The capabilities described in each of those stages provide an essential foundation for a dynamic datacenter, which is an IT environment that not only supports the business but, at times, is part of the product delivered by the business. It is an agile IT environment, built on top of an optimized and automated virtual infrastructure, that is:
Service oriented: Delivering on-demand, standardized services to the business (internal customers, partners, etc).
Scalable: With the ability to span heterogeneous physical, virtual and cloud environments.
Secure: Providing security as a service to internal / external customers. Feb. 19, 2011 02:00 PM EST Reads: 694 | By Maureen O'Gara In its first acquisition of the new Apotheker administration – which is expected to bulk up on enterprise software – HP is buying Vertica Systems, the six-year-old real-time analytic database start-up in Massachusetts begun by serial entrepreneur and database brand name Michael Stonebreaker.
Its stuff analyzes massive amounts of columnar data, produces “just-in-time” business intelligence, supports Hadoop, and runs on commodity hardware in physical, virtual and cloud environments.
HP, which will add its brand and global reach to the effort, expects to leap ahead in the race to analyze massive amounts of data. It will presumably replace the late NeoView in its affections. Feb. 19, 2011 12:00 PM EST Reads: 671 | By Elizabeth White Putting a cloud integration and Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) strategy in play prepares enterprises for the next generation of flexible, distributed and scalable cloud-enabled business applications while facilitating greater operational efficiency, generating more revenue, and helping businesses enter new markets.
This free guide from Fiorano discusses various architectures for cloud-based integration in use today, together with the pros and cons of each such architecture. This is followed by a discussion of the architecture requirements for a general purpose, cloud-enabled ESB platform that enables the seamless integration of on-premise, public and private cloud applications. Feb. 19, 2011 11:45 AM EST Reads: 746 | By Maureen O'Gara Skytap, the self-service cloud peddler, claims its users can now provision a self-service hybrid cloud in less than 10 minutes using a secure, two-way connection between their data center and Skytap’s virtual public infrastructure.
Usually setting up a hybrid cloud is a complex, time-consuming, pricey exercise, requiring days of coding, altogether a barrier to adoption.
Skytap says it’s reduced the hocus-pocus to a point-and-click GUI used to set up, test and configure IPSec connections between Skytap and the private data center. Feb. 19, 2011 11:30 AM EST Reads: 592 | By Maureen O'Gara Pretty much still an Intel loyalist, Dell admittedly acted out of character Monday and wheeled out a high-end AMD Magny-Cours server, claiming to have put more cores, more memory and more I/O in a humble little 2U than anyone ever has.
It said it could not get its kind of 96-core density with Intel and that’s before AMD pushes out Bulldozer and Interlagos.
The head of Dell’s research computing Tim Carroll and its newfangled Poweredge C product manager Armando Acosta said it makes no never mind with users if it’s Intel or AMD when they have no more power or real estate left and their lust for compute cycles is still unfulfilled. Feb. 19, 2011 11:00 AM EST Reads: 1,032 | By Maureen O'Gara Novell said late Thursday that it had gotten stockholder approval for its $6.10-a-share acquisition by Attachmate.
Novell still needs US and German antitrust clearance to sell its patents to a consortium of Microsoft, Oracle, Apple and EMC. The acquisition hinges on it.
Novell said it is still collecting the information the Justice Department asked for in a second request for information a couple of weeks ago. That second request to both Novell and the consortium came after the Open Source Initiative and the Free Software Foundation complained. Feb. 19, 2011 09:30 AM EST Reads: 574 |

Feb. 15, 2011 05:45 AM EST Reads: 3,491 | By Elizabeth White There are three major reasons why public clouds offer order-of-magnitude improvements in economics: pay-only-for-what-you-need, automation, and commodity hardware. No new generation of computing has ever delivered order of magnitude improvements like public clouds. It is a bit surprising that only now are many hosting and technology companies starting to dramatically shift their business models to embrace the cloud. In fact, many of these leaders have only begun the process of discovery and rese... Reads: 21,325 By Fuat Kircaali I can't comprehend that any event producer anywhere in the world today would answer this question by picking any one of the five available options presented. "A leading tool?" What do you mean by "a leading tool?" What other tools would you possibly have in this day and age? This question, the survey itself and its participants belong to the last decade.
I personally don't use email anymore; I communicate through "Twitter."
We don't do press releases unless we have to; we tweet stories to our roughly 12,000 followers in 8 channels. The news gets amplified to hundreds of thousands instantly.
Even during Cloud Expo, we reach more people by Twitter than the announcements we make through loudspeakers in the convention centers.
I would love to contact the people who are conducting this survey and ask them if any company answered their first question as "don't really consider it."
In an age where I personally hail a cab at an airport through Twitter, I can't possibly comprehend which century bubble those people might be living in. Reads: 7,409 Further cementing its position as The Largest Cloud Computing Event in the World, the organizers of the 7th Cloud Expo, being held at the Santa Clara Convention Center, Santa Clara, CA, announced today that the event will also feature – on November 2nd, 2010 – a CloudCamp unconference.
CloudCamp @ Cloud Expo is aimed at anyone working with, or interested in working with, cloud technologies.
"With the rapid change occurring in the industry, we need a place where we can meet to share our experiences, challenges and solutions," said CloudCamp co-founder Dave Nielsen, who will personally be facilitating the process on site at the Jacob Javits. "At CloudCamp," Nielsen continued, "participants will be encouraged to share their thoughts in several open discussions, as we strive for the advancement of Cloud Computing." By Kevin Hartig Cloud computing is becoming one of the next industry buzz words. It joins the ranks of terms including: grid computing, utility computing, virtualization, clustering, etc.
Cloud computing overlaps some of the concepts of distributed, grid and utility computing, however it does have its own meaning if contextually used correctly. The conceptual overlap is partly due to technology changes, usages and implementations over the years.
Trends in usage of the terms from Google searches shows Cloud Computing is a relatively new term introduced in the past year. There has also been a decline in general interest of Grid, Utility and Distributed computing.
Likely they will be around in usage for quit a while to come. But Cloud computing has become the new buzz word driven largely by marketing and service offerings from big corporate players like Google, IBM and Amazon. The World's Most Influential Blogs By JP Morgenthal It’s not about what’s different, it’s about getting on board with the changes in the game or get left behind.
People say, “What’s so different about Cloud Computing?”, “This is nothing more than managed hosting or mainframe computing redux”, “what’s old is new again”. What was it that Gordon Gekko says to Jake on the subway in “Wall St.: Money Never Sleeps?” oh yeah, “a fisherman can always see another fisherman coming.” Technically, Cloud may be perceived as only incremental changes over wh... Feb. 19, 2011 11:00 AM EST Reads: 763 | By Lori MacVittie Do you really need a firewall to secure web and application services? Some organizations would say no based on their experiences while others are sure to quail at the very thought of such an unnatural suggestion.
Firewalls are, in most organizations, the first line of defense for web and application services. This is true whether those services are offered to the public or only to off-site employees via secure remote access. The firewall is, and has been, the primary foundation around which mos... Feb. 17, 2011 04:30 PM EST Reads: 601 | By Hovhannes Avoyan What’s affordable these days? I mean, what does that mean to you, as an IT pro?
Is affordable replacing expensive servers every time you need more capacity to grow your business or store more data? Or is the more affordable answer putting all that power on the Cloud, relying on its resources and paying only for what you use?
If you’re considering more than just cost before switching to the Cloud, then here are some factors you may want to consider. Feb. 17, 2011 01:30 PM EST Reads: 576 | By David Deans Theoretically, all types of organizations should be predisposed to consider the transition to managed cloud services -- due to the numerous anticipated benefits. However, based upon the results of recent market research in the United States, it now appears that some sectors are much more likely to be part of the growing early-adopter movement.
International Data Corporation (IDC) announced the findings of a new market study, which forecasts that from 2009 to 2014 the U.S. public IT cloud servic... Feb. 17, 2011 11:45 AM EST Reads: 582 | By Ellen Rubin Security concerns about the public cloud have always been a top priority here at CloudSwitch. Moving to the public cloud is fraught with potential risks and security managers have legitimate concerns about data integrity, an opaque security model in the cloud and unauthorized access by cloud administrators. The question is: how can you protect information in a shared multi-tenant environment just as you would within the secure confines of your data center? With that question in mind, I thought... Feb. 17, 2011 11:00 AM EST Reads: 557 | By Kevin Benedict Some kinds of solutions just seem naturally suited for being in a cloud-centric network. For example, why do companies buy and deploy their own in-house EDI solution and create unique data maps to every supplier or business trading partner in order to exchange EDI data? This is about as inefficient as possible. This should be a cloud-based, network centric service, which is why SAP added the SAP Information Interchange (SII) last Spring. Now all SAP customers can connect their EDI processes o... Feb. 17, 2011 09:30 AM EST Reads: 540 |
