Emerging markets are a very good revenue opportunity for cloud providers. Having a clean slate gives start-ups in emerging markets an optimal opportunity for cloud solutions. These markets are also a place where a lot of development organizations are flourishing and play an important role as advisors in the implementation of cloud computing solutions in other markets.

Amazon - with Oracle's blessings - is planning to add Oracle's Database 11g Release 2 to its cloudware next quarter as part of its Relational Database Service (RDS).
It says folks with Oracle licenses will be able to run the thing without incurring additional software licensing or support charges.
Those without an Oracle license will pay hourly licensing with no upfront fees or long-term commitments.
The hourly rate depends on the Oracle Database edition and the size of the DB Instance. The widgetry will also be available as Reserved DB Instances, which offers a discounted hourly usage charge in exchange for a one-time up-front fee for each DB Instance. Both one-year and three-year reservation terms will be available.

No pricing details are available yet and Amazon didn't let on what its kickback to Oracle will be.
Oracle said it will support customers who use their existing license in the cloud. Amazon will support the others with Oracle backing it up.
Amazon RDS already supports MySQL, the open source database that now belongs to Oracle complements of its acquisition of Sun Microsystems.
Reportedly responding to demand, AWS VP of database services Raju Gulabani says he's "ready to have conversations with interested customers so they can plan for future deployments."
Amazon RDS is supposed to cut the time needed to provision a relational database and its underlying infrastructure hardware and software from days to minutes. It also manages ongoing maintenance tasks such as updating database software, taking continuous database backups for point-in-time recovery, and exposing key operational metrics via a web dashboard. And of course it can be scaled.

Larry Ellison let it be known at the recent Oracle OpenWorld (an ironic name if I ever heard one) that he saw nothing wrong with companies using just Oracle solutions across the entire enterprise. Of course, he would think that given that he runs Oracle. But these days, more often than not, you are going to find multiple solutions from a variety of vendors, and you need a cloud solution that is going to support them all.

I'm just waiting for the "paperwork" to go through, but I'm really excited about what I'm hearing from customers about the cloud. Verizon purchased Terremark late last week. In this blog entry, Forrester’s James Staten calls Terremark’s hosted IaaS business one of the strongest in the market and noted that of the Forrester clients planning to invest in private cloud, 40% see hosted private clouds as the most attractive option. This SeekingAlpha article speculates that AT&T;, CenturyLink and Windstream might consider acquiring players like Savvis, Rackspace, Cogent Communications Group, Level 3 and Limelight Networks.
