By Tim Negris The Whitehouse Office of Management and Budget has announced that, from now on, cloud computing would be the “default approach to IT” for US government agencies. The move comes as an element of a sweeping set of government IT reforms begun last summer intended to “close the IT gap” between the public and private sectors. The cloud-first policy is expected to reduce a 2000+ data center infrastructure by as much as 40%, lowering costs, improving security and performance, and speeding up the depl...Nov. 25, 2010 10:15 AM EST Reads: 1,029 |
By Tim Negris This week, managed services provider Datapipe made an important announcement about something they are doing with Amazon Web Services that reminded me of a Zen kōan. That’s a paradox intended to defy logic and to cultivate intuition, like the question, “What is the sound of one hand clapping?” Alas, the tech press beat seldom ascends the craggy path to satori and, so, the announcement did not receive much attention, despite its Amazon angle. I guess it was just too oblique to allow even the re...Nov. 20, 2010 11:09 PM EST Reads: 1,007 |

As those of us who are students and practitioners within the field of digital forensic know , any advance in this area tend to be primarily reactionary in nature and most likely developed to respond to a specific incident or subset of incidents. This can pose a major challenge in the traditional systems; one can only imagine what can occur when faced with a distributed cloud ecosystem.
As enterprises move inexorably towards the Cloud, a faint murmur in the distance is growing louder and louder. What is it – the security forces objecting…the CFO wondering where their money is going now…business teams clamoring for faster response time? Good guesses, but this group never makes quite that much noise – it’s the operational teams scratching their heads wondering how, particularly given their existing set of challenges, they are going to keep their heads above water trying to manage...
Here are a few predictions about the Cloud for 2011 from an article I read that I thought I’d share with you. Some of them are quite startling. Here goes: - Don’t Expect Cloud Standards in 2011 – Yeah, there will be drafts of standards, and possibly some ratifications by groups such as DMTF, NIST [...]
This holiday season, give your friendly neighborhood hacker (black or white hatted) a nice pat on the back. ‘Why?’ you may ask. ‘Aren’t they responsible for the nasty botnets, malware, SQL injections, stolen identities, government infiltration, Stuxnet, and all the malicious things you warn against in this very blog?’ Yes, but over the years it’s been the very same folks attempting to and successfully gaining access to systems to infect, steal, snoop and causing general havoc that have made s...
The CloudScaling blog scores something of a coup with its interview of Netflix’ Cloud Architect, Adrian Cockcroft. As everyone should know, NetFlix moved its core business application to Amazon Web Services, including “encoding movies for streaming, log analysis, production web site and API, most everything that scales with customers and streaming usage”. This Porticor blog [...]
Cloud services have opened up new opportunities for organizations to be more efficient and flexible and operate more competitively, but what happens when I.T. just isn’t moving quickly enough to meet the increasing infrastructure needs of various departments?
Well, often, they’ll go rogue. The advantage of being able to procure infrastructure in a utility model makes the cloud an attractive choice for departments wanting to sidestep corporate I.T. processes, controls, and timelines. At the sa...
