Making no splash about it and apparently limiting sales to the U.S.,
Hewlett-Packard quietly introduced the first and only Windows 7-based tablet
PC last Friday. The thing's got a swipe-able touchscreen that can turn
handwritten notes into legible text.
Called the HP Slate 500 - no news there - the device is positioned as
business's alternative to Apple's iPad although it has a smaller 8.9-inch
screen compared to iPad's 9.7 inches, which Steve Jobs claims is as small as
you can get and still be practical. It still should be able to play high-def
movies and supports the Apple-scorned Flash.
HP imagines companies running their custom applications on the thing.
It starts at $799, which is towards the upper end of iPad's $499-$829 range.
HP is going to use its own recently acquired Palm webOS for a consumer (and
probably business) tablet coming out next year.

Verizon started peddling the iPad this week beginning at around $630 with a
Mi-Fi gismo to connect it to the Internet.
But starting Armistice Day, November 11, it's also gonna be selling Samsung's
seven-inch Flash-supporting Android 2.2 Froyo-based Galaxy Tab tablet - which
is supposed to be the first real competitor to iPad.
It'll charge $600 without a contract. It's got an optional 1GB $20-a-month
data plan, or, if you like, $35 for 3GB, $50 for 5GB and $80 for 10GB.
Galaxy can connect directly to Verizon's network.

Oracle amended the skeletal patent and copyright infringement suit it filed
against Google and Android in August and this time through it charges Google
with directly copying parts of its copyrighted Java code.
The amended complaint says:
"Android includes infringing class libraries and documentation. Approximately
one third of Android's Application Programmer Interface (API) packages
(available at http://developer.android.com/reference/packages.html) are
derivative of Oracle America's copyrighted Java API packages (available at
http://download-llnw.oracle.com/javase/1.5.0/docs/... (more)

We don't do press releases unless we have to; we tweet stories to our roughly 12,000 followers in 8 channels. The news gets amplified to hundreds of thousands instantly.
Even during Cloud Expo, we reach more people by Twitter than the announcements we make through loudspeakers in the convention centers.
I would love to contact the people who are conducting this survey and ask them if any company answered their first question as "don't really consider it."

Cloud computing overlaps some of the concepts of distributed, grid and utility computing, however it does have its own meaning if contextually used correctly. The conceptual overlap is partly due to technology changes, usages and implementations over the years.
Trends in usage of the terms from Google searches shows Cloud Computing is a relatively new term introduced in the past year. There has also been a decline in general interest of Grid, Utility and Distributed computing.
Likely they will be around in usage for quit a while to come. But Cloud computing has become the new buzz word driven largely by marketing and service offerings from big corporate players like Google, IBM and Amazon.
