Platform as a Service(PaaS) is a growing area of interest in cloud computing. The inclusion of infrastructure with industry leading middleware capabilities reduces the barrier to create and deliver innovative applications and business processes to customers. PaaS can be a game changing direction taken by start-ups, independent software vendors, systems integrators and hosting companies who are all involved in putting their solutions to end customers. Start-ups have the potential to build and deliver applications leveraging their domain knowledge with flexibility and agility never possible before. This can help them build solutions without a great deal of investment and a value proposition that customers would be hard pressed to ignore. Independent Software Vendors (ISV’s) can migrate their existing on-premise solutions to platforms that can be supported at much lower... (more)

Red Hat Revenues Jump 20%

While the nearest other never-as-successful commercial Linux operation contemplates getting sold or some other fate, Red Hat Wednesday turned in revenues of $219.8 million, up 20% year-over-year, for the summer quarter ended August 31 although currency took a toll. Not quite the $212 million the market hoped for but apparently good enough since the Hat's stock rose slightly after-hours after a dip during business hours. The company raised its guidance for the full year to revenues of $877 million-$885 million, up from $835 million-$850 million, earning 76 cents-77 cents non-GAA... (more)

Cloud Computing: Amazon Backs Cloud Storage Start-up

Cloud storage newcomer Cirtas Systems said Monday that it got $10 million in A funding from NEA, Lightspeed Venture Partners and Amazon. Cloud or Not to Cloud That Is The Question

The IT world is locked in an ongoing debate over the usefulness of Cloud Computing; those who believe it directly affects ROI, and those who waver in its importance and believe there is no sure way to keep data safe within the Cloud. To help fuel and resolve the debate, the European Financial industry is assembling in the Netherlands for the FST Summit Europe between the 21 - 24 September. This committee of CIO's, CISO's, Heads of Architecture and Compliance have highlighted cloud computing as a major talking point and are specifically interested in the pitfalls as well as the b... One of the least covered cloud computing topics has been its impact on traditional IT services and the outsourcing business. While there are many opportunities to provide IT consulting services to help organizations leverage cloud computing, there is a compelling argument for services companies to utilize the cloud to optimize the delivery of their entire portfolio of services. In his session at the 7th International Cloud Expo, Ahmar Abbas, Sr. VP of Infrastructure Management at CSS Corp, wil...
The most fundamental features in any "cloud platform" are storage and databases. Today, in addition to scalability and performance (latency and throughput) requirements, the need is for more flexibility and adaptiveness for these features. In his session at the 7th International Cloud Expo, Ikuo Nakagawa, PhD, Director at Intec Systems Institute, will describe the technical architecture of a cloud storage implementation capable of supporting scalable and high-performance "random access i/o"....
Despite the compelling business benefits of cloud computing, companies are becoming increasingly concerned about application performance in the cloud, and the dramatic impact that this can have in terms of lost revenue and lack of user adoption. In his session at the 7th International Cloud Expo, Mark Hillman, Vice President, Strategy and Product Line Management at Compuware, will outline the key issues that need to be addressed in managing the performance of these “borderless” applications, a...

I can't comprehend that any event producer anywhere in the world today would answer this question by picking any one of the five available options presented. "A leading tool?" What do you mean by "a leading tool?" What other tools would you possibly have in this day and age? This question, the survey itself and its participants belong to the last decade. I personally don't use email anymore; I communicate through "Twitter." We don't do press releases unless we have to; we tweet stories to our roughly 12,000 followers in 8 channels. The news gets amplified to hundreds of thousands instantly. Even during Cloud Expo, we reach more people by Twitter than the announcements we make through loudspeakers in the convention centers. I would love to contact the people who are conducting this survey and ask them if any company answered their first question as "don't really consider it." In an age where I personally hail a cab at an airport through Twitter, I can't possibly comprehend which century bubble those people might be living in.
Further cementing its position as The Largest Cloud Computing Event in the World, the organizers of the 7th Cloud Expo, being held at the Santa Clara Convention Center, Santa Clara, CA, announced today that the event will also feature – on November 2nd, 2010 – a CloudCamp unconference. CloudCamp @ Cloud Expo is aimed at anyone working with, or interested in working with, cloud technologies. "With the rapid change occurring in the industry, we need a place where we can meet to share our experiences, challenges and solutions," said CloudCamp co-founder Dave Nielsen, who will personally be facilitating the process on site at the Jacob Javits. "At CloudCamp," Nielsen continued, "participants will be encouraged to share their thoughts in several open discussions, as we strive for the advancement of Cloud Computing."
Cloud computing is becoming one of the next industry buzz words. It joins the ranks of terms including: grid computing, utility computing, virtualization, clustering, etc. Cloud computing overlaps some of the concepts of distributed, grid and utility computing, however it does have its own meaning if contextually used correctly. The conceptual overlap is partly due to technology changes, usages and implementations over the years. Trends in usage of the terms from Google searches shows Cloud Computing is a relatively new term introduced in the past year. There has also been a decline in general interest of Grid, Utility and Distributed computing. Likely they will be around in usage for quit a while to come. But Cloud computing has become the new buzz word driven largely by marketing and service offerings from big corporate players like Google, IBM and Amazon.
