At SYS-CON Media we see our inventories are filling up to 100% capacity for the months of November, December, and January, and we are seeing better-than-normal RFP activity for the first quarter of 2010.
When I say this, I am comparing the current insertion order activity to the same period last year. We will be closing 2009 roughly 32% below 2008 in revenues (far better than any other tech media company), which forced us to reduce our expenses for the same period by around 40%. Last fall, while the world was falling apart, we were preparing for a 40%-45% drop in advertising revenues for 2009. We did better than our worst projections.

5th International Cloud Computing Conference & Expo: Call for Papers Is Open
When we compare the number of RFPs in the pipeline for November 2009 through January 2010 to the same period last year I feel confident that near-term tech spending is promising, at least in our segment of the business. Tech media is traditionally the last to get hit in food chain during a downturn and the first to see the effects of recovering market.
Our observations at SYS-CON Media will be supported by the industry as the earnings news and projections start to come in for the rest of the year.

Cloud Computing Expo 2009 West in Santa Clara
Cloud Computing Expo is the new PC Expo, Comdex or InternetWorld, and will be the next global IT event for the decade starting with 2010.
This year's West Coast conference had 1,700 pre-registered delegates on the Friday before the conference opened. More than 500 additional registrations came in over the weekend and on-site registrations, which brought the number of delegates who registered and attended for the conference to roughly 2,250, more than double a year ago.
As far as the expo floor goes, out of 50 sponsors and exhibitors, 46 companies confirmed during the conference that they will participate in the 2010 Cloud Computing Expo at the same or higher level.
Most exhibitors on the expo floor highlighted the quality of the leads they got from the conference, which is due to the fact that we had no free expo option on the registration page.
I personally believe Cloud Computing Expo had the most qualified audience of any technology event in recent years.

Cloud Computing Expo 2010 East in New York City
The next Cloud Computing Expo will take place in less than six months on April 19-21, 2010 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City, with a projected attendance of more than 5,000 delegates and an estimated 80+ vendors on the expo floor.

Kircaali came to the United States from Zurich University, Switzerland in 1984 while studying for his PhD, to design computer systems for SH-2G submarine hunter helicopters for the U.S. Navy. He later worked at IBM's IS&CG Headquarters as a market research analyst under Mike Armstrong's leadership, an IBM executive who later ran IBM Europe and AT&T; and Fuat was the Director of Information Systems for UWCC, reporting to CEO Steve Silk (later Hebrew National CEO), one of the top marketing geniuses of the past two decades.
Kircaali founded SYS-CON Media in 1994, a privately held tech media company with sales exceeding $100 million. SYS-CON Media was listed twice by Inc 500 and Deloitte and Touche as one of the fastest-growing companies in North America. Kircaali launched Ulitzer, Inc., a revolutionary "new media" start-up in mid 2009.

The past few weeks we have been discussing some of the mistakes made in early cloud deployments. This week we are discussing a key mistake that occurs fairly often; one that only manifests long after the solution is operational…blindly assuming that Cloud equals costs savings. Blasphemy, you say – how could it possibly not cost less? Let’s take a look at the considerations and components of IT cost, and revisit this question at the end.
The unfortunate truth is that most enterprises have well-e...
Generally, I believe standards are a good thing for both technology consumers and providers. For consumers, they act as a focusing lens for the kinds of capabilities they should be looking for from a particular implementation (regardless of the technology we are talking about). From a technology provider standpoint, you may often hear the rallying cry that standards impede innovation. By and large, this is a bogus argument. When formed at the right time, standards encourage innovation by normali...
The last couple of years have been painful, to say the least. Some call them unprecedented, financially, but I do believe that is pushing the descriptor a bit far, since there have been plenty of instances where business pretty much en-masse questioned the amount that IT returns for their investment and cut budgets, so the feel of this recession is not much different than what we’ve felt before, it’s just by necessity. The funny bit of this is that everyone seems to agree that IT spending still ...
Advances in Identity Management technologies will provide foundations for an "Identity Metasystem", providing the tools for securing information in a manner that greatly accelerates adoption of Cloud computing. Typically conversations about Cloud Computing quickly lead to the perceived big roadblock holding back its adoption, data privacy and security.

Today's IT organizations face a dual challenge of "keeping the lights on" while providing "new services" at unprecedented rates with reduced investment support from the business. At the same time, the very business model of IT is changing – how applications, content, information, and infrastructure are delivered.
One of the biggest barriers to business execution and innovation today is managing complexity. This barrier forces the largest IT investment spend to be focused on keeping lights on wh...
