Rackspace Hosting wants to be the one that defines the public and private
commodity cloud.
So the other day - in the name of fostering standards, ensuring cloud
interoperability and defeating vendor lock-in - it set in play OpenStack, an
open source cloud platform to which it immediately contributed the code to
its Cloud Files Amazon S2-like storage widgetry and promised to kick in its
Amazon EC2-like Cloud Servers code once it's ready.
Cloud Files and Cloud Servers is the stuff that powers Rackspace's public
cloud and the reference implementations that come of the OpenStack effort
will be free. There will be no dual-licenses like Eucalyptus Systems, the
other open source cloud where ex-MySQL chief Marten Mickos is now CEO.
RackSpace says it will put all its code out under the Apache 2.0 license.

Novell and Tencent, reportedly China's biggest Internet service portal, have
set up a research lab in Shenzhen, China, to jointly develop an Internet Data
Center (IDC) cloud computing platform.
Tencent, which is supposed to have 480 million active users and 568.6 million
IM accounts, is going to use SUSE Linux and PlateSpin Orchestrate as its
auto-deployment system.
It's also suppose to use Novell's intelligent workload management solutions,
including PlateSpin Workload Management, to create an IDC cloud platform that
users can use to build, purchase and run business apps. IDC ve... (more)
As many of you know, a new open-source cloud platform, OpenStack, was
recently announced. Here at OpenNebula, we think this is a very exciting
development in the cloud community, and we're glad to see so many major
players coalescing around an open-source solution. However, we have also been
concerned by the all the high-profile announcements and opinion pieces that
describe OpenStack as the first initiative for the definition of an open
architecture for IaaS cloud computing and a "real" open-source
project, criticizing some existing open-source cloud projects as being

Cloud.com, a provider of open source private and public cloud computing
software, on Wednesday announced it is collaborating with leaders in open
source and cloud computing on OpenStack, an open source cloud platform
designed to foster the emergence of technology standards and cloud
interoperability in both the hosting industry and the enterprise. The
initiative was launched by Rackspace and includes key technology
contributions from NASA’s Nebula platform as well as broad industry support
from leading technology companies such as Citrix. (see related release from
