HUNTSVILLE, AL -- (Marketwire) -- 04/16/10 -- Synapse Wireless®, Inc. today announced the initial release of SNAP Application code to the open source community under the Eclipse Public License (EPL) and the creation of OpenSNAP.org due to requests from customers and its large user forum. Synapse's user forum has hundreds of application modules or functions submitted by its employees and customers, as well as almost 1000 registered individual SNAP developers. Contributing EPL-based open source code provides this large community rapid, accelerated application development while also protecting their commercial releases.
The EPL, a business-friendly free software license, is approved by the Open Source Initiative (OSI) and is listed as a free software license by the Free Software Foundation (FSF). It protects both contributors of software as well as authors or companies that want to create related, but separate, modules of software by allowing them to be licensed independently, including under a commercial license.
Synapse is releasing this SNAP application code at OpenSNAP.org, a community organization that provides a central group for collection and promotion of open source development for applications using the SNAP network operating system. More information about OpenSNAP.org can be found at OpenSNAP.org.
"Our customers have been exchanging and sharing application level code for use within our forum community for years," said Wade Patterson, president and CEO. "We are excited to formalize an open source approach for our large, and growing, development community."
