Steve Jobs has certainly gotten a lot chattier and a lot feistier since he
got a new liver.
Right after he went public the other day with all the reasons why Adobe Flash
sucks and why Apple wouldn’t touch it with a 10-foot barge poll – an item
the commentariat lavished billions of pixels on – he told the assistant on
policy matters to the president of the Free Software Foundation Europe Hugo
Roy to expect patent holders to “go after” the open source video codec
Theora and its ilk for infringement.
This in the same week that cops tossed a blogger’s home office in search of
evidence about an iPhone prototype that Apple reported stolen after it came
into said blogger’s possession, raising another ruckus.
What Mr. Jobs said exactly (from his iPad of course) was:
“All video codecs are covered by patents. A patent pool is being assembled
to go after Theora and other ‘open... (more)

Adobe introduced its Creative Suite 5 (CS5) Monday, the thing on which nearly
60% of its revenues depends, the thing that's got to sell better than
recession-tossed CS4 did, in the middle of a hailstorm that drew more
attention to it than it normally would have gotten.
Last Thursday Apple quietly rewrote its rules for developers and barred the
backdoor that Adobe was figuring on using to get Flash onto iPhone, iPod and
iPad, having already been barred from using the front door because Steve
Jobs, as everyone must know by now, loathes Flash.

Asustek CEO Jerry Shen said at a conference in Taiwan that Asus will show off
an Android-based Eee Pad tablet at Computex in June and start selling the
thing in Q3, according to DigiTimes.
The Eee Pad will include Flash, USB and an integrated webcam, features
Apple's iPad lacks. DigiTimes says the Eee Pad will use Nvidia's Tegra chip
and run $475-$510 with bundled carrier service.
Asus expects to sell 300,000 tablets this year.
Asustek gained fame for the original netbook in 2007, the first of its widget

In a stunning, largely unforeseen move, HP announced that it has shelled out
$ 5.70 per share or roughly $1.2 billion to acquire Palm. Arguably a very
aggressive and risky move considering that the fact that Palm's market share
is about 5% in the U.S. and less than 2% globally. Symbian (Nokia) commands
the largest market share in Smartphone environments today while Palm's WebOS
lags way behind without any unique position in the market. Looking at HP's
prior acquisitions and how they were rebranded almost immediately after
purchase -- EDS became HP Enterprise Services and 3Com bec... (more)
Apple says it sold its millionth iPad last Friday, 28 days after the dingus
went on sale April 3, a faster uptake than the vaunted iPhone.
It also said iPad users had downloaded 12 million+ apps from the App Store
and over 1.5 million ebooks from the new iBookstore.
In a statement Steve Jobs said that “demand continues to exceed supply.”
There are some 5,000 apps for iPad that take advantage of its Multi-Touch
user interface, large screen and high-quality graphics. iPad will run almost
all of the 200,000 apps on the App Store, including ones users bought for
their iPhone or iPod t... (more)

Entrepreneurial opportunities abound as this classic disruptive technology begins to proliferate, so it is no surprise that SYS-CON's industry-leading International Cloud Expo is going from strength to strength. Call for Papers is now open! Reads: 15,529 By Ellen Rubin The talk at the Cloud Computing Expo this week in Santa Clara was all about enterprise cloud adoption. Is it real? Is it already happening? If so, who’s doing it, which applications are they running and which clouds are being tested? To a large extent, cloud computing is a victim of its own somewhat out-of-control hype cycle. Since so much has been written and discussed about the cloud in 2009, there is now a growing impatience for actual results. Her talk was entitled, "Enterprise Cloud Computing, the Infrastructure’s Final Revenge." She acknowledged the problem with defining Cloud Computing, and then went on to give her paragraph-length definition of “the cloud”. Her talk focused on the part of the Cloud behind the firewall. “Today’s CIO must increase the flexibility of the infrastructure,” said Singer. Cloud is now officially past the engineering phase, well into the sales phase – and the business community is scrambling to understand the implications of a virtualized world.
