Cloud Expo New York
Ever wonder how cloud-based transaction monitoring works?
A good transaction monitoring service should ensure fast application performance and good user experience for visitors from anywhere around the globe.
And it should guarantee complete business functionality of applications 24 hours, seven days per week.
Here’s a detailed description of what the services entail for one company – the world’s largest package delivery firm and a leading global provider of specialized transportation and logistics. They use transaction monitoring to make sure the billing and reporting modules on its website are available continuously.
The independent monitoring service follows activities on their site every five minutes – all day long. Among tasks, the monitoring service:
- Opens the website
- Logs into the system, using a “test” user account
- Goes to the payments page and searches for available invoices
- Finds the latest invoice and goes to the details page and checks certain content
- Checks the history of all invoices
- Goes to the report generation page
- Generates report of payments and checks the content
- Downloads the report
- Signs out from the system
Reports from the monitoring service summarizes the end-user customer experience for the company – offering information on peak, mid-point and low activity periods.
The company was able to investigate low-activity periods by studying a detailed transaction report provided by the monitoring service. It soon discovered that its Sign In/Sign Out and Invoice History pages were slow.
As a result, the company was able to pinpoint operational issues, optimize its database and, in the end, improve the user experience for its visitors and customers.

By now most of you have probably heard about the GoogleHack in China.
Yesterday Google's Chief Legal Officer David Drummond wrote in a blog post that indicated the accounts of dozens of Gmail users in the U.S., Europe and China who are advocates of human rights in China were routinely accessed by third parties.
Drummond said that these accounts were compromised through phishing scams or malware, not through holes in Google's computing infrastructure.
And as expected there are headlines saying that this proves that "The Cloud" isn't secure and CAN'T BE TRUSTED. I'm here to tell you it is the opposite. The GoogleHack proves the Cloud is More Secure then Traditional Desktop Software, not less.
Advocates of FCoE will immediately mention the benefits of simplified network management, elimination of redundant cabling & switches, reduced power and heat requirements, alongside enhanced data network performance yet despite that still today the FCoE revolution failed to take place. But as the enhancement of Lossless Ethernet begins to really take shape with its promise of a non requirement for TCP/IP overheads, CEE / DCE / EEDC are now looking like viable transports for storage traffic and storage fabrics.
Ben Behrouzi, founder of DotNext and co-founder of Reply.com, a serial entrepreneur from the San Francisco Bay Area, initiated a relief campaign on Ulitzer for the victims of the Haiti Earthquake. In his blog entry Behrouzi calls everyone to participate on an easy Red Cross donation campaign. "Haiti needs help from everyone and the Red Cross backed by the US State Department have launched a simple viral text message based fundraising initiative to allow everybody to deliver some help to Haiti. Simply text “Haiti” to 90999 from your phone to donate $10 to the relief effort underway."
Normally when you read or hear someone talk about application environments running on cloud platforms a lot of focus is put on provisioning and elasticity. Mainly the claims are that you should be able to very quickly provision full application environments on the cloud platform and that those environments should grow, and shrink, based on the demands on the system.
I certainly have no argument that those capabilities are important functionality for a cloud platform, but based on some recent conversations with several different users I'm beginning to think we aren't talking enough about another important feature for these solutions. That feature is the degree to which the application environments running on cloud platforms can be audited.
