Industry-Standard EnergyBench Now Integrated Into EEMBC Benchmark Suites
EL DORADO HILLS, Calif., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The Embedded Microprocessor Benchmark Consortium today announced that it has integrated EnergyBench(TM) software into all of its benchmark suites (with the exception of GrinderBench(TM)). Previously, EEMBC(R) licensees had to pay approximately $1000 for the use of this tool - today EEMBC offers EnergyBench to its licensees without charge. EnergyBench is a standard tool and methodology that calculates the amount of energy a processor consumes while running EEMBC's performance benchmarks.
"As energy conservation and green technologies continue to grow in importance, it is EEMBC's responsibility to encourage the measurement and analysis of energy consumption during the design of systems using embedded processors," said Markus Levy, EEMBC president. "The consortium has met the challenge by agreeing to include EnergyBench with the purchase of its benchmark suites."
EEMBC has implemented EnergyBench using National Instruments' LabVIEW graphical system design software and X Series data acquisition (DAQ) hardware. While the performance benchmarks are running on the target board, EnergyBench calculates the average energy per iteration using multiple unaliased sampling frequencies and an adaptive statistical process. The DAQ hardware and executable, defined by LabVIEW, sample the voltage levels as well as a trigger channel and write the samples to a file. Users can also use the EEMBC setup to examine minimum and maximum power while the benchmark is running. LabVIEW is a graphical programming environment used to develop measurement, test, and control systems with graphical icons resembling a flowchart.
"Efficiency is no longer just a product differentiator - it is a requirement," said Brian Betts, senior group manager for data acquisition at National Instruments. "Because consumer focus continues to trend more and more toward power efficiency, embedded system designers must become increasingly aware of the power requirements in their designs."
EnergyBench is included with the purchase of EEMBC AutoBench, ConsumerBench, DENBench, Networking, OABench, TeleBench, or MultiBench suites. Licensees of these suites will also be able to use EnergyBench on EEMBC's CoreMark benchmark. For further information, visit www.eembc.org/benchmark/power_sl.php.
About EEMBC
The Embedded Microprocessor Benchmark Consortium (EEMBC) develops benchmark software that helps processor architects and embedded system designers better understand the capabilities of embedded microprocessors and the systems in which they are used. Currently available EEMBC benchmark software allows users to predict unicore and multicore processor performance and its associated energy cost in digital entertainment, digital imaging, networking, and office automation applications. Additional suites address automotive, embedded Java, and telecom applications. The consortium's operations include an EEMBC Technology Center that provides a full range of benchmarking and benchmark-score certification services in addition to serving as EEMBC's R&D center for benchmark-software development.
EEMBC's members include AMCC, AMD, Analog Devices, ARM, Broadcom, Cavium Networks, Centaur Technology , Code Sourcery, Cypress Semiconductor, esmertec, Faraday, Freescale Semiconductor, Fujitsu Microelectronics, Green Hills Software, IAR Systems AB, IBM, Imagination Technologies, Infineon Technologies, Intel, LSI, LynuxWorks, Marvell Semiconductor, MediaTek, Mentor Graphics, Microchip Technology, MIPS Technologies, National Instruments, NEC Electronics, Nokia, NXP Semiconductors, Open Kernel Labs, Qualcomm, Realtek Semiconductor, Red Hat, Renesas Technology, RMI, Samsung Electronics, Sony Computer Entertainment, STMicroelectronics, Sun Microsystems, Texas Instruments, VirtualLogix, VMware, and Wind River Systems.
