Well, well, well, a little bird points to IBM as gumming up the works with the European Commission so Oracle and Sun can’t close their deal. Oracle of course picked up Sun after IBM’s negotiations with Sun failed and Oracle made IBM the intended target of the proposed acquisition in an ad on the front page of the Wall Street Journal last week so the idea that IBM is whispering in the EC’s ear makes perfect sense. And IBM has plenty of practice using the European Commission to attack its enemies. Just ask Microsoft. Oracle CEO Larry Ellison claims the European Commission’s prolonge... (more)

Understanding the Role Storage Plays in Virtual Environments

In 1998, a little-known company called VMware had just opened the doors of its Palo Alto office. Ever since computing moved from the mainframe to the desktop, the push had been bigger, faster, and more - more CPUs, more servers, more power, more cooling - and ultimately more complexity, more cost, and more waste. In the early 2000s, studies found that average utilization of CPUs across b... (more)

Open Source Start-up Poses Mainframe Dilemma for IBM

IBM's paranoid defense of its mainframe monopoly is going to be tested again but this time if it blows the start-up out of the water, or denies it clearance to compete, it'll be messing with an open source operation, and a European open source start-up to boot. The European Commission, an admitted open source advocate, is already entertaining at least one known complaint about IBM's alleg... (more)

As the pressure mounts to meet more stringent budgets, CIOs need to find the proper balance between transforming IT and reducing costs. IT operational costs continue to increase as a percentage of overall IT dollars. At the same time, IT is being pressured to provide an innovative, competitive advantage for the business. Will the Enterprise Cloud support both? "Can the Enterprise Cloud make infrastructure operations faster, easier, cheaper, and safer while also unleashing the transformative creativity of the workforce?" asks Jill Tummler Singer, Deputy CIO of the Central Intelligence Agency, who will on October 6, 2009, be giving the opening keynote at SYS-CON's 1st Annual Government IT Conference & Expo.

In her keynote Singer will explore whether the Cloud will be both a strong efficiency play as well as the Infrastructure’s Ultimate Revenge by positioning IT to be the accelerator of corporate strategy instead of its bottleneck. She will discuss how Enterprise Cloud Computing naturally fits in an organization's overall technology strategic plan and "how you can convince your boss to love the Cloud."
