LOS ANGELES, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 09/24/09 -- Platinum Studios, Inc. (OTCBB: PDOS), an entertainment company that controls an international library of more than 5,600 comic book characters which it adapts, produces and licenses for all forms of media, and Tony Krantz, veteran producer of such films as director David Lynch's "Mulholland Drive" and executive producer of FOX's "24," have partnered to develop the Platinum Studios graphic novel, "Mal Chance." Screenwriter Scott Murphy has been tapped to write the screenplay.
Today's announcement comes on the heels of several recently publicized partnerships as Platinum's newly revamped development department has launched more projects than at any other time in its history. "Mal Chance" is yet another original property that hails from Platinum Studios' massive multi-universe library that rivals the sizes of Marvel and DC's superhero universes. Since Platinum Studios remains independent of major studio affiliation, it has successfully averted the same rights restrictions the larger players have experienced, including those which Disney now faces in the wake of its $4 Billion acquisition of Marvel Entertainment over Marvel's most popular superhero characters.
"Mal Chance" is the story of Lola, a member of an ancient society of assassins targeted for death by a powerful gangster. Lola's only hope for survival is to bring down the gangster's entire illicit organization with the help of Dennis, a by-the-numbers FBI agent, unaware of her true identity.
"Flame understood 'Mal Chance' from the moment we first sat down and discussed it," said Platinum's Chairman and CEO Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, who will serve as producer on the film with Flame's Tony Krantz.
"'Mal Chance' is a wonderfully visual world steeped with contemporary and complex characters -- all playing on the edge of life and death decisions," said Krantz. "Working with Scott and Platinum continues to be a true pleasure and symbiotic."
Former Universal Pictures senior executive Randy Greenberg of The Greenberg Group along with Flame Ventures' President, Ross Dinerstein, will serve as Executive Producers. Greenberg was instrumental in bringing all financing and producing parties together for Platinum Studios' independently financed feature film "Dead of Night" with Hyde Park Entertainment and Omnilab Media, currently in post-production.
Platinum Studios' film and TV division is developing "Cowboys & Aliens" with producers Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard and Brian Grazer and DreamWorks, Universal Pictures, Imagine Entertainment and Kurtzman/Orci (the writing team behind the "Transformers" franchise and the resurrected "Star Trek" franchise). In addition, Platinum is developing "Unique" at Walt Disney Pictures with "Harry Potter" producer David Heyman, "The Witchblade" with "Wanted" executive producer Marc Silvestri, Top Cow Productions, Inc. and Arclight Films, "Atlantis Rising" with DreamWorks, Kurtzman/Orci and director Len Wiseman ("Underworld" and "Live Free or Die Hard") , "The Weapon" with Disney Channel's "Wizards of Waverly Place" star David Henrie, and an untitled project at Sony Pictures Animation.
Krantz and Flame Ventures are currently in production on the theatrical, "The Big Bang" starring Antonio Banderas, which Krantz is producing and directing.
