Rackspace Hosting has sent its Cloud Servers API to public beta, a step on the way to open sourcing the thing and a big difference between Rackspace and rival Amazon.
Cloud Servers is the company's months-old Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) widgetry and the community-developed, standards-based API will let its users automatically scale the number of server instances up and down.
General manager Emil Sayegh calls this programmatic control "essential for igniting an ecosystem around the Rackspace Cloud."
As an example, Rackspace said developer Michael Mayo wrote an app that will let Rackspace customers manage their Cloud Servers or Cloud
Files accounts anytime, anywhere on their iPhones. It should be available at the App Store next month.
The API will also let developers work with partners on pre-built applications.
Implemented using a RESTful Web Service interface, the API will introduce four new features including server metadata, server data injection, host identification and simpler shared IP groups.
Aiming to build a cohesive approach to all products in the Rackspace Cloud suite, Cloud Servers shares a common token authentication system that allows seamless access between products and services.
