This is a year of firsts for Microsoft: its first wide-scale layoffs, its
first drop in quarterly sales and earnings, and now its first debt offering.
It sold five-, 10- and 30-year bonds Monday and raised $3.75 billion on the
strength of its Triple-A credit rating from both Moody's and Standard &
Poor's at negligible interest rates, barely more than government bonds fetch.

Having just bought poor old SGI out of bankruptcy, Rackable Systems said
Monday that it’s changing its name and will call itself Silicon Graphics
International, SGI for short, from now on. The Rackable name will become the
brand used on x86 clusters.
Rackable evidently figures that as tarnished as the once-iconic SGI brand has

VKernel, whose virtual appliances manage VMware-based virtual server
environments, has gotten a $7 million B round led by Longworth Venture
Partners and joined by existing investors Hummer Winblad and Polaris Venture
Partners. It got a first round worth $4.6 million a year ago. Its widgetry
