Intel Redesigning Belated Tukwila

Four-core Itanium chip is delayed supposedly so can switch from DDR2 memory to DDR3 memory

Intel's Tukwila chip, its first four-core Itanium chip, has been delayed another six months. It's supposedly being held up so Intel can switch from DDR2 memory to juicier Nehalem-like DDR3 memory compliments of a scalable buffer memory architectural revision. It's also making the 65nm Tukwila socket-compatible with two future Itaniums, the 32nm Poulson and the mysterious Kittson, giving OEMs more server runway. Tukwila was supposed to be out early last year or before, a date that slipped to the end of 2008.
