Infragistics Announces NetAdvantage for JSF
UI components based on JavaServer Faces allow developers to create Java UIs

Infragistics has announced the immediate availability of Infragistics NetAdvantage for JSF 2008 Volume 2, a complete set of pre-built, quality-tested components based on JavaServer Faces that allows developers to create Java UIs. With these AJAX-enabled components, developers can leverage the power of JSF to build and deliver high-performance, robust Web 2.0 applications.

With NetAdvantage for JSF 2008 Vol. 2, developers can take advantage of a host of new features including:

  • Cell Activation in WebGrid enables users to "focus" on single cells within the WebGrid, and move that focus around with various keyboard keys.
  • Aggregate Functions in WebGrid Column Footers fulfills users' need for a spreadsheet-style data display that shows calculations such as sum, average, count, minimum and maximum. Built into the WebGrid is support for calculating these aggregate functions from the underlying column data in the grid's column footers.

NetAdvantage for JSF 2008 Vol. 2 also introduces three AJAX-enabled, Early Access features allowing customers to preview and provide feedback on future technologies under development. These include:

  • WebDropDown, a new AJAX-enabled component that allows type-ahead data entry making for an intuitive data entry experience for end users.
  • WebTree Drag and Drop that enhances the WebTree component to support drag and drop features, allowing developers to move nodes within the tree as well as add, edit and delete nodes.
  • JavaScript Event Handling provides event handling "hooks" to allow developers to call client-side Javascript in response to virtually any user action.

All of these components now support the JavaServer Faces 1.2 standard and can be deployed on the most popular frameworks.

Source code is included with every subscription to NetAdvantage for JSF 2008 Vol. 2 and enables developers to modify or extend components on an as needed basis. In addition, Infragistics offers developer support to all subscribers.

NetAdvantage for JSF 2008 Volume 2 IDE design-time support includes Eclipse, IBM Rational Application Developer and NetBeans 5.5. It runs on all major application servers including BEA WebLogic, IBM WebSphere, Sun ONE, JBoss and Apache Tomcat. It also supports AJAX in the portal environments of BEA WebLogic, IBM WebSphere and JBoss.

Bruce Arnold wrote: Kudos to the Cloud Crowd for Re-Inventing the Wheel! One thing 30 years in the IT industry has taught me is that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Another is that the only memory we seem to access is short-term. Yet another is that techno-marketeers rely on that, so they can put labels like "revolutionary" and "innovative" on platforms, products and services that are mere re-inventions of the wheel ... and often poor copies at that. A good example is all the buzz about "Cloud Computing" in general and "SaaS" (software as a service) in particular: http://tinyurl.com/6let8x Both terms are bogus. The only true cloud computing takes place in aircraft. What they're actually referring to by "the cloud" is a large-scale and often remotely located and managed computing platform. We have had those since the dawn of electronic IT. IBM calls them "mainframes":...
