Search Basics

Please note that the default search is based on a Boolean AND; that is, results that are returned contain all of the search terms you entered. Refer to the list below for search examples and their explanations.

Constructing a Search - Helpful Hints
To get the most out of your Sun Search, choose your search terms and phrases carefully. Keep these tips in mind:
  • Be specific. Search for words that are unique and try adding descriptive words. For example, a search for java may give you too many results. If you're really looking for Java Desktop System, specify java desktop or office productivity.

  • Try a synonym. If you get too few or too many results, try using a synonym for your original words. For example, instead of searching for java classes, try java training.

  • Use an alias. Sometimes a product can known by a more than one name. For example, even though the product name is Java Platform, Standard Edition, you can find additional information by searching for j2se, jdk,j2sdk, j2se, etc.

  • Check your spelling. A single misspelled or mistyped word can change your results. It's easy to overlook transposed letters: java virtaul machine gives very different results than java virtual machine. Likewise, it's easy to omit a letter: solars looks very similar to solaris, but the results are not.
  • Check your spacing. Some product names do not have a space: StarOffice is the correct product name, not Star Office. Other product names do have a space: Sun Fire servers, not SunFire servers.

Capitalization - Case Sensitivity
The default search is entirely case insensitive. Searching for java gives the same results as searching for JAVA. Use the Advanced Search to enable a case-sensitive search. Please note: if Case Sensitivity is on and the search term is in all lowercase, then the search will return results that contain either upper or lower case search terms. But, if there are any capital letters in the search term and case sensitivity is on, then it will return results that contain the search term in the case as entered. This means you cannot search for a term in only lowercase.

Exact Phrase Search
Adding quotation marks when you are searching on multiple terms will yield results that contain that exact phrase. For example, searching for "enterprise workgroup solutions" yields results that contain the exact phrase enterprise workgroup solutions.

Word Stemming - Word Variations
To return the best possible search results, we use word stemming for all searches. "Word stemming" means that variations of your search term are included in a search. For example, if your search term includes manage, then the search will also return management, managed, manages, managing, etc.

Note: stemming is applied to exact-phrase searches.

Wildcard Search
A wildcard search expands the results of a search query to terms that match a wildcard operator in a search term. The wildcard operators are ? for a single character and * for partial terms.

Note, wildcard searching does not work within quoted strings. There are also other known problems with wildcard searching.

Open Results in New Window, Search Terms Highlighted
Click the icon to open a new window. Where available, the new window will open with your query term(s) highlighted.

Some browsers are configured to block popup windows. You may need to update your browser's "allowed sites" for this functionality to work.

Saved Searches
The Saved Searches function allows you to save any number of searches. This time-saving feature allows you to compose a simple or complex query and save it to use again later. To use the Saved Searches function:
  • Perform your search. Your query can be as simple or complex as you need, including use of Advanced Search functionality.
  • You can also select a search tab/subtab you wish to see (e.g., Products, Company News).
  • Click the "Save this Search" link in the Saved Searches box on the right side of the page. A pop-up window will appear prompting you to give your search a name. Assign a name and click the "OK" button.
  • To rename your saved search, click the [Rename] link below the name of your saved search. A pop-up window will appear prompting you to give your search a new name. Assign a new name and click the "OK" button.
  • To delete your saved search, click the [Delete] link below the name of your saved search.
Please note: For the Saved Searches function to work properly, JavaScript and cookies must be enabled. Also, if your browser blocks popup windows, add onesearch.sun.com to the "Allowed Sites." Because the search is saved in a cookie, if you clear your browser's cookies, all saved searches will be lost.
