Sun Microsystems is betting on the expansion and success of open
source, the need to conserve space, and the desire to keep energy
costs down, as it delivers thousands of new servers and releases its
UltraSparc T1 processor code.
Sun announced plans to publish specifications for the UltraSPARC-based
chip, including the source of the design expressed in Verilog, a verification
suite and simulation models, instruction set architecture specification
(UltraSPARC Architecture 2005) and a Solaris OS port. The goal is
to enable community members to build on proven technology at a markedly
lower cost and to innovate freely. The source code will be released
under an Open Source Initiative (OSI)-approved open source license.
Sun has added a new part to its motto "The network is the computer" with the corollary "Zero barrier to entry."
Sun reiterated that it is making its entire stack open source over time, and announced that its complete software stack
will be free.
Is there a category of software big enough, mature enough and frustrating to customers enough to give rise to the next major software powerhouse-- let alone multiple software powerhouses?
