As Novell released their third beta of openSUSE (SUSE Linux 10.0 Beta 3) today I was anxious to get my hands on it. I'm always excited to see what's new in SUSE's world as this distro has been on my personal top 10 list for quite some time.
When SUSE was absorbed by Novell many people were amazed and excited, yet a little concerned about the unknown. What would this giant do to SUSE? It seems like it worked out well for the duo as Novell is now frequently talked about as the number two (enterprise) distro, right behind Red Hat. SUSE has definitely not suffered from this merge although the benefits which they have received are not very obvious (besides the bling).
The buzz with end users this week is that the Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) chose wisely when it rejected an allegedly independent comparison of Linux and Windows.

Once upon a time, reviews related to GNU/Linux and free software in open source community publications and Web sites were candy-coated. We were amazed that things actually worked, even if making it work required hacking makefiles and configuration files, compiling from source, and getting your hands dirty in other ways, and gave everything glowing reviews.

You can use a Pocket PC with Linux, but the integration of a device such as Hewlett-Packard's iPaq with Linux software such as Evolution requires add-on software. If you wish to use a Windows CE device with Linux you will need to install SynCE, a set of open source tools. You can download the software from SourceForge.net.

For a while it seemed as if the free software community was treading water by improving automatic configuration tools and device support, fighting ridiculous legal issues, and arguing over tools instead of concentrating on its original goal of providing free replacements for proprietary programs.

A particular headache for businesses stems from the proliferation of so-called vanity licenses. Rather than standardizing on any of the more than 50 licenses that the OSI has approved, many vendors insist on drafting their own license.

Not so long ago, the only way to see whether Linux would run on a particular PC was to install the OS on its hard drive. Times change. Nowadays, many so-called live CD versions of Linux boot and run solely from a CD-ROM. Ubuntu Linux, our 2005 World Class winner for Best Linux Distribution, has a live CD version available for download. You may be asking yourself, "How do I download a CD-ROM?"

GoblinX Mini edition is a son of GoblinX and contains only XFce as a window manager and GTK-based applications. The ISO image is about 150MB, but it contains an excellent collection of applications. The Mini edition is easier to download and remaster because modules are already prepared to allow a fast rebuild of the ISO file.
DistroWatch reports - Freespire is a new Linux distribution, a free edition of Linspire with all proprietary components and trademarks removed. The distribution comes with a free repository of over 1,500 packages available via apt-get and Synaptic. This initial release functions as a live CD only and serves as a proof of concept. It certainly looks like an interesting idea: combining the benefits of Linspire's excellent usability and hardware auto-configuration with a free repository of Debian packages.

Mandriva Linux 2006 Beta 3 was quietly released on Tuesday. No mention of the release is as of yet posted at mandrivalinux.com, but a 3 ISO set and a Mini CD are available for download.
I've been following these last 3 betas to see what Mandriva has got up their sleeve for their official Mandriva Linux 2006. The final release was expected to be available on September 15 but it looks to be delayed by at least a week, according to their release schedule which is now a week behind.
Before we get into the details of this release, here's the technical breakdown of this release from the Mandriva Linux 2006 DistroChangelog:

While browsing DistroWatch a week or so back I noticed that a fresh GoblinX release was available. I just had to grab their Live CD ISO and give it a whirl as I loved their super slick previous release 'GoblinX 1.1'.
From their site 'GoblinX is a Live-CD that is based on the excellent Slackware distribution. It is directed towards those users who appreciate quality applications and a workspace that is both practical and beautiful. GoblinX contains some of the most often used and praised applications for Linux. click on the ~Applications~ button to see which ones. A Live-CD is a completely operational Linux system contained on one CD-ROM and it runs from any CD-ROM drive, without requiring the installation on your hard drive.'
