My Picks from the Emerging Technology Conference
ETech is a fun look at the stuff that will either make it into the mainstream technology business in a couple of years, or will flame out spectacularly. Either way, good sport. Here are my favorite sessions from the conference program.

Amazon and A9 re-remix the virtual and physical
Walmart might be in your face no matter where you turn when you’re out and about, but without an Amazon presence, it probably doesn't exist.

More on OpenOffice XML
Peter Sefton's "Hacking Open Office" comes at an energetic time for OOo. I've been pointed to ooo2dbk, a tool for generating DocBook XML from OpenOffice.org documents, which opens up even more XML possibilities. Let me also mention my complementary article to Sefton's, which covers some additional topics such as XML Catalogs.

Best Encryption for Mail?
OK, I think it's finally time for me to start encrypting my mail on Mac OS X. The last time I did this was in college and I was using Sun OS (not Solaris at the time). Needless to say, I don't remember much about that. So, I figured I'd turn to the Mac community at O'Reilly Net for pointers on the best tools to use to get my Mail mail encrypted.

Firefox versus AdSubtract: How Not to Compete with Open Source
Firefox is an open platform with a large and growing body of extensions that make it useful and customizable far beyond what Internet Exporer has ever provided. AdSubtract was once a useful way to improve IE, but in a world where Firefox exists, it doesn't have much of a future.

CD Baby rewrite : shipping costs are the most complicated thing in the world
Wouldn't it be nice if we would just tell the customer, at time of purchase, "We'll ship this thing you've ordered at the lowest rate possible, and bill you exactly what it turns out to cost." But nooooo.... people want you to PREDICT what it's going to cost!

CD Baby rewrite : a shipments table!
In 1.2 million CDs sold, I had never thought of "shipments" as a separate table. I always thought of it as attributes of an order, but if we're going to be sending things from multiple locations, we'll have multiple shipments for an order, each shipment with its own attributes, so...

The Symbian OS Virus.. Myth or Reality?
The Symbian OS virus scare... myth or reality?? The press seem mixed on this and from where I stand it appears the mainstream press is content with running item after item scaring the pants off people about yet another worm that can infiltrate a Symbian OS device.

Virtual Folders in mutt
My email is generally well-organized. I have a lot of different folders and procmail rules that automatically move email to the various categories of email I've set up. Sometimes, though, I can't exactly remember which category a message is in. While mutt, my preferred email client. is great at searching for a term within a folder, it isn't as easy to search all of your email folders at once. I found a few possible solutions to this problem, and ended up rolling my own solution.

What is the largest text file that Java can read into a String?
My rough calcuations suggest you might have trouble with a string larger than 500,000,000 characters inside Java, or reading in a text file larger than 167 Mbyte, no matter how much RAM you have.

The Python comunity has too many deceptive XML benchmarks
"I can't stands no more." The benchmark politics in Python/XML processing have been heating up, and while there is always room for discussion of which of the many Python/XML packages are faster (as part of overall education of users), I don't think users are served by artificial and mysterious benchmarks. Luckily, with a bit of code, it's very easy to demonstrate some of the problems I complain about.

CD Baby rewrite : thought process of subsets/limiters solution
A big change I'm adding in the CD Baby rewrite is the ability for the store to be browsing/searching only a subset of its items. This is useful for genre-specific stores, where browsing and searching the catalog would only show you jazz albums. The thought-process took a few rounds...
