Big-time app uses the a/@rel attribute, boosting "folksonomy" development
Technorati's use of the "folksonomies" at flickr and del.icio.us means big things for web metadata, and their use of the HTML a element's rel attribute should interest anyone who cares about link markup.

The future of Mono!
As I see it, Mono will only become a popular development platform on Linux with the help of the Windows community. They are the largest market for all things .NET and C#, so if Mono is ever going to reach critical mass, then it must be through them.

Amara XML Toolkit: Simple things simple. Complex things possible.
Nelson Minar followed up my recent blog offering some sample Python/XML code, but he seems rather confused in his response. I designed Amara XML Toolkit to make the simple things easy and the complex things possible. Perhaps I wasn't clear enough on that, so here is clarification and more sample code.

Your security doesn't always matter
Your network could have the best security in the world, and it doesn't matter. You don't need to crack the machine if you can steal the domain registration.

Could Open Source Journalism Have Saved 60 Minutes?
A few days ago I posted a blog called "Are Blogs the New Journalism?" which garnered some lengthy rebuttals both here and on my blog. I learned something from that conversation and some other reading and started thinking about it in terms of open source.

Code, respecting "XPath, XML, Python"
In my earlier response to Nelson Minar's article I offered discussion of his thoughts that there are too many choices in the mixed bag of Python/XML libraries. Now here's some relevant code.

Thoughts on "XPath, XML, Python"
Nelson Minar told me of his thoughtful article. I've always thought it's a great thing that Python has so many tools for XML processing, but a couple of commentators have complained that the rich choice comes with some rich confusion. Fair enough. In this article some discussion. In the next, some code.

Does Microsoft find excuse for their security woes in mythology?
In a recent O'Reilly weblog comment, a familiar pro-Microsoft voice trotted out the theory that the only reason Microsoft has securty woes is that they're popular. We've all heard and debunked this flawed theory, but this time, since the original blog was about Microsoft's priorities, I started to wonder whether belief in this theory was a reason for Microsoft's security blind spot.

Switching to VoIP, and Writing About it
I've just spent all week re-reading my manuscripts, circling grammar mistakes and typos that I swear I've already fixed, and combing the concepts I've presented, and the order in which I've presented them... Then I say to my wife, "This book is going to be good."
