Intel has decided to cash out of the "clock speed is everything" game. Can't say we didn't see it coming. In fact, this day has been coming ever since the canceling of "Tejas", the desktop replacement of Prescott which was supposed to drive Intel's chips up to 10GHz on a 65 nanometer revision of the Netburst core design. Silicon features, otherwise known through the industry as blue crystals, have not been marketed by the largest desktop CPU manufacturer nearly as hard as clock speed has for many years. How was Intel able to get away with that? Why are they no longer able to simply sell newer chips on GHz alone any more? What are they going to do about it? Those are some of the more pertinent questions out there these days. Discuss (1)

Most of you have at the very least heard about TV tuner cards for your PC. They allow you to not only watch television on your PC, but also to record shows and movies and use time-shifting so you can pause live TV, in effect giving you a Tivo-esque experience. Today we'll be taking a look at Gainward's "portable" solution in this field. Discuss (8)

There, I said it: The "Microsoft of Sound". In case you weren't aware, that generally isn't seen as a positive comment. Let's see the similarities. Both are considered monopolies in their respective areas. Both use patents to scare off competitors, or just buy them out. Both have bloaty, buggy software. That's a lot in common. Too much. (Are we sure they aren't run by the same people?) Discuss (3)

The maximum core and memory overclock of the Gigabyte X800 Pro was 550MHz core and 1100MHz memory. This is an increase of 75MHz core and 200MHz memory over the 475/900 stock speed. But the card does not support hardware monitoring. The 6800 is the better performer for Halo and Far Cry while the X800 Pro takes the lead in NFSU. Discuss (0)

NCQ is the latest buzz word in hard disk technologies. It adds an intelligence to the way disks access data. It's the biggest thing since sliced bread (or, at least, since the 10K Raptor drives). How does it measure up in the real world? The Maxtor DiamondMax 10 with NCQ is tested against today's fastest SATA drive, the Western Digital Raptor. Discuss (1)
