DSL

DSL: Short for Digital Subscriber Line. This is technology that uses ordinary copper telephone lines to provide Internet speeds ranging from 1.5 to 9 Mbps--speeds that are 30 to 50 times faster than a regular 56-kbps dial-up modem. DSL also allows users to receive voice and data simultaneously, since the signal is carried on a higher frequency than normal telephone communications.

DSL is consider the broadband of choice for most small business and households. DSL comes in several different types.  You have ADSL, SDSL, and IDSL. The A in ADSL signifies that this is asymmetric DSL. ADSL is found in most homes and business that need fast download speeds and very little upload speeds.  A typical ADSL connection would generate up-to 1.5megs download and 128K up-load.  There are higher bandwidth ADSL connection available, but the distance from CO will be the indicators as to what speeds are actually available to you.  ADSL can run over a phone line while a person is using the phone or fax.  It only requires one channel.  The data does not flow up and down at the same time thus the reference to asymmetrical.  When installing an ADSL connection, make sure you use the filter to eliminate any noise

The S in SDSL stands for symmetrical.  SDSL is capable of downloading and up-loading data at the same time thus it is a symmetrical connection.  It is also referred to as a Single Line connection and using the same digital signaling as ADSL. SDSL SDSL cannot share a phone line with voice or run in conjunction with a fax.  It requires both channels of the phone line and when installed it comes with its own phone line.  SDSL is the DSL of choice for business with multiple users accessing the internet over a network. High-end gamers find SDSL the DSL of choice for the higher upload speeds.  When purchasing SDSL you have many broadband speed options, but the up-load and download will always be the same.  A typical SDSL connection will be 768K down and 768K up. IDSL is a combination of DSL and ISDN,  The I in IDSL represents "ISDN" Digital Subscriber Line.  The main difference between IDSL and ISDN is that IDSL is always on unlike ISDN. The speeds are slightly higher at 144K and the connection is symmetrical like SDSL.

IDSL is most commonly used when ADSL and SDSL are not available due to the distance form the CO - IDSL can go out up to 30,000 feet from the CO where  ADSL and SDSL usually will not travel more than 15,000 feet.
