Swing Sightings Preview: WebECS
WebECS is a graphical user interface for Energy Control Systems' Linux-based building automation systems. It features Swing applets that allow viewing or modifying schedules, temperature setpoints, trend graphs, alarms, and so on for large hotels and resorts, shopping malls, and other buildings. Some final words about distribution divergence...and a request for Java Gotchas..
A few weeks ago, I wrote about distribution divergence and that spawned what I thought was a pretty terrific comment stream, so thanks. I wanted to talk just a smidgen more about this, something I consider very important. Also, a friend of mine had a question about Java development...

At the JavaOne Conference Last week, Sun bravely hosted a discussion about open source Java, and as a result I feel the need to chime in about something Gosling said about Linux platform divergence and the issues surrounding Linux distribution porting differences. Branching open-source software: a bad thing?
Using open-source frameworks and tools already available instead of rolling your own solution is a good thing. However, what happens when you find out you can't solve a problem by extending a class or changing some configurations? What if you write a patch to a problem and no one commits it after weeks? Is it a good thing to start branching nearly every library and tool you need to use?
